The ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Universe Is Expanding With a Mysterious New Project
Team Avatar creators are already looking ahead to the future of the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, with a new mystery project quietly in development.
The news comes from an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko opened up about the future of Avatar Studios and revealed that there is more coming beyond the upcoming projects fans already know about.
Avatar Studios was created by Paramount and Nickelodeon in 2021 as a dedicated division to expand the world first introduced in Avatar: The Last Airbender and later continued in The Legend of Korra. Since then, the team has been developing multiple projects set across different parts of the Avatar timeline.
While the upcoming Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie has been the main focus, Konietzko confirmed that another project is also being worked on behind the scenes. “I’m working on another thing, which we’ll announce when the time’s right,” Konietzko told Entertainment Weekly.
The creator did not reveal any details about the project, leaving fans to speculate about what direction the franchise could take next. It is unclear whether the mystery project will be another animated film, a new series, or something completely different within the Avatar universe.
The announcement comes as Avatar Studios continues to expand the franchise with several planned stories. Along with the Aang-focused movie, the team is also developing Avatar: Seven Havens, a new animated sequel series that will follow the next Avatar after Korra.
For DiMartino and Konietzko, the goal has always been to explore new stories rather than simply repeat what came before. The creators explained that returning to the original characters for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender came with challenges because the first series already had a strong ending.
“It’s always a challenge to write a sequel. A prequel is an even bigger challenge. And a ‘se-prequel’ or whatever we’re gonna call it, this other third type is maybe the most challenging,” Konietzko said.
The upcoming movie takes place years after the events of the original series, showing Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, and Toph as adults. The story explores how the characters and the world changed after the end of the Hundred-Year War.
The creators have also suggested that Avatar Studios has many more ideas waiting to be explored. According to Konietzko, the Aang movie is only one part of a much bigger plan. “The Aang movie was just one of a whole slate,” he said.
