‘The Big Bang Theory’ Star Mayim Bialik Reveals She Suffered Weeks of Side Effects After One GLP-1 Injection
Mayim Bialik has shared a detailed account of a difficult health experience after trying a GLP-1 injection. In her essay, she explained that a single dose of the medication led to severe gastrointestinal problems that lasted for weeks and forced her to stop using it entirely.
Bialik said she did not start the medication for weight loss at first. Instead, she explained that several doctors suggested it might help with ongoing health issues related to autoimmune conditions she has been dealing with for years.
She wrote, “I went on a weight-loss drug because a doctor told me it might help ease symptoms I’ve struggled with for basically my entire adult life.”
The actress, known for her roles in Blossom, The Big Bang Theory, and her time as a co-host on Jeopardy!, said she has had a long and complicated relationship with body image. In her essay, she described how her perception of her body changed over time, especially after gaining weight during her teenage years while on medication. She also reflected on how early menopause contributed to recent changes in her body.
After consulting multiple doctors, Bialik agreed to try a GLP-1 medication. However, she said the reaction to the first injection was immediate and intense.
She described severe physical symptoms that included digestive distress, cramping, bloating, and an inability to keep food or liquids down. She wrote, “I took one shot of the lowest dose of a synthetic GLP-1, and to say I had an adverse reaction would be somewhat of an understatement.”
Bialik said her condition became serious enough that she needed medical attention, including IV fluids after she became dehydrated. She also explained that she could barely eat during the first days after the injection, saying, “For the first two days, I ate maybe one cup of rice and half a banana. I couldn’t even keep electrolyte drinks down.”
Throughout the experience, she stayed in contact with her doctor. She later learned that gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and diarrhea are commonly reported with GLP-1 medications. Medical sources, including the Mayo Clinic, have noted that while these drugs are widely used for weight management, research is still ongoing into long-term effects.
Bialik said the symptoms continued for weeks due to the long half-life of the medication. She also consulted a gastroenterologist, who confirmed that her reaction, while severe, was not unusual.
Despite stopping the medication, she reflected on the emotional side of the experience. She wrote about how deeply body image concerns remain present in her life and in wider culture. She also described how the pressure to be thinner is amplified in Hollywood and on social media, especially with the growing popularity of weight-loss drugs.
At one point in her essay, she described a moment of mixed feelings while still dealing with symptoms. She wrote that even in discomfort, she had a difficult thought about appearance and weight.
In the end, Bialik said she chose not to continue the medication and gave away the remaining doses. She also reflected on how the experience changed her understanding of people living with chronic digestive conditions, saying it gave her more empathy for those who deal with invisible health struggles in everyday life.
