Hollywood has no shortage of legendary directors who eventually step back from the grind, choosing to let their body of work speak for itself. Ridley Scott has never been one to follow that script, and at nearly 89 years old, he’s making it clear he has no intention of starting now.

Scott’s career has spanned more than half a century, producing genre-defining films across sci-fi, historical epics, and crime dramas alike. Even as he approaches an age when most filmmakers have long since stepped away from the director’s chair, his output shows no signs of slowing down.

In a new interview, Scott addressed the idea of retirement head-on, and his answer left little room for interpretation. “I despise the idea of quitting,” Scott said, speaking to Il Venerdì di Repubblica.

He didn’t stop there, either. Scott went even further in describing his feelings about the very concept of stepping back from filmmaking, stating that he hates the word “retirement” itself, saying it sounds like a death sentence, and adding that he intends to remain active for as long as his health allows.

That philosophy tracks with a career that has shown zero signs of decline heading into his ninth decade. Following the release of ‘Gladiator II,’ Scott has kept a packed slate, with his post-apocalyptic sci-fi film ‘The Dog Stars’ set to arrive in August, and a new adaptation of ‘Treasure Island’ starring Hugh Jackman already confirmed to be in pre-production.

Beyond his upcoming projects, Scott also touched on his long-overdue recognition from the film industry. After four previous nominations without a win across his fifty-plus year directing career, the filmmaker is set to receive an honorary Academy Award this November. His reaction to finally landing the accolade was refreshingly blunt, and unmistakably him, as he simply remarked that it was about time.

For Scott, though, the honor isn’t really the point. He has stated that commercial success, cultural longevity, and providing employment for hundreds of members of his crew matter far more to him than any individual trophy.

Scott has also been candid about his skepticism toward the current state of Hollywood, previously describing the industry as drowning in mediocrity given the sheer volume of films being produced today. His solution has reportedly involved revisiting his own back catalog, admitting that rewatching films like ‘Black Hawk Down’ left him surprised by how well his earlier work has held up over time.

That restless energy has also kept the door open for further installments in his most iconic franchise. Scott has previously confirmed that he’s already developing ideas for a potential third ‘Gladiator’ film, describing a concept inspired by the emotional weight of ‘The Godfather Part II’ and centered on a man who doesn’t want to be in the position he finds himself in.

With multiple major projects already lined up and a filmmaking philosophy built entirely around forward momentum, Scott shows no interest in slowing his pace anytime soon. For a director who has spent decades reshaping entire genres, the idea of stepping away seems less like a possibility and more like something he simply refuses to entertain.

What do you think keeps Ridley Scott going after 50+ years?
