‘Snowfall’ left a lot of unfinished business when it ended, and its spinoff has made a point of exploring a different corner of 1990s Los Angeles. With ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga‘ now past its midpoint, every new hour feels like a test of whether the music-industry drama can balance personal heartbreak with street violence.

The series, created by Malcolm Spellman for FX and Hulu, premiered on September 8 and runs for 8 episodes. It follows Wanda Bell (Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John) as they try to reinvent themselves in the early 1990s West Coast rap scene. Wanda stakes her future on her cousin Lamar Kinsey (Asante Blackk) and on the volatile rapper Artillery, while Leon tries to leave the streets behind through his free legal clinic.

The previous episode, ‘Homecoming’, blew the Kinsey family wide open. Lamar learned that his mother Rochelle died following a violent confrontation with his father, a secret his grandmother Gerty and grandfather Big Daddy revealed during a family meeting.

The latest episode, ‘Exit Wounds’, aired October 13 and was written by Michael Kastelein and directed by Rashidi Natara Harper. It begins after Lamar’s big talk with Gerty and almost a month after the album ‘Back 2 Da Hood’ hit the scene. Artillery is being interviewed by DJ Block, who points out that they are still waiting on new music from Lamar before they can properly work on the album.

That puts the pressure squarely on Lamar, who hasn’t made a single song in 3 weeks. When Wanda finds out, she is concerned, and a meeting at the label makes things worse. Jenny suggests that Artillery’s album will need a whole list of producers rather than just Lamar, which is meant to ease his burden but has the opposite effect.

The music storyline collides with the violence around it. Artillery and his crew are attacked in broad daylight by gunmen who speed away, and Dara marches into DG’s office to confront him. Leonard smooths things over with an advance, explaining how Artillery can receive a monthly stipend against future earnings, a setup DG privately likens to how the pimping game works.

DG also meets with Leon and hands over the bag of cash from the swap meet. His real goal is to learn how Leon managed to move so many copies of ‘Back 2 Da Hood’. Leon plays it cool and offers to review DG’s contracts, then brings his concerns to James, because DG has all of his artists tied up in these deals and Wanda and Lamar can’t navigate it alone.

Things go from bad to worse when Artillery isn’t a fan of Lamar’s work. The pair clash over the hardships they’ve each endured, and Lamar walks out after Artillery chews him out for bringing his mother into the music. James then shows up and talks with his brother about why he hid the truth, admitting he lost faith in Big Daddy and turned to the streets, and that he didn’t want Lamar to follow.

That leads Andy to take Lamar out into the streets, including tagging, and the change of scenery sparks his creativity. He returns to the label with a new album concept built around rebirth and return, depicting Artillery’s and Lamar’s journey through Los Angeles after everything falls apart. He has even rebranded himself as Nex, also known as DJ Nex.

DG already has a list of producers waiting, and Wanda is caught at a crossroads. She ultimately decides to trust Lamar, backing his vision rather than Jenny’s producer list. DG makes clear that Lamar can keep going for now but will be replaced if he slips up.

The final scene turns violent. Deon shoots Keith dead in retaliation for robbing DG and stealing his watch, which Keith had been wearing openly as a show of disrespect. He then places Keith’s gun in his hand and walks away.

The ending ties the episode’s themes together. Wanda chooses loyalty over a safer career move, while DG’s crew shows that disrespect in this world carries a deadly price. One critic suggested that ‘Back 2 Da Hood’ could turn out to be lightning in a bottle, and bringing in too many producers risks watering down what makes Lamar’s work special.

With 2 episodes remaining and the next one arriving October 20, the album finally seems to be coming together, but the cost may be rising for everyone involved.
