The Hulk’s Savage Return in ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ Just Got Its Most Detailed Look Yet

Marvel has spent nearly a decade softening one of its most destructive characters, slowly trading raw fury for calm intellect until the two sides of Bruce Banner fully merged into one manageable hero. That evolution made sense for the story being told at the time, but it also left longtime fans wondering if audiences would ever see the character’s uncontrollable side again.

That wait appears to finally be ending. Mark Ruffalo is returning as Bruce Banner in ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day,’ marking his first appearance since 2022’s ‘She-Hulk, Attorney at Law,’ and this time the character is shedding the calm, composed Smart Hulk persona audiences have grown used to.

Marvel Studios has now unveiled its most detailed look yet at this new version of the character, revealing a redesigned Savage Hulk built to look noticeably more monstrous and far less resembling Ruffalo’s own features than any previous iteration. According to details shared from an early peek at ‘The Art of Spider-Man Brand New Day,’ that shift away from Ruffalo’s likeness was completely intentional, part of a deliberate effort to push the character back toward his more feral roots.

In the film, Banner is introduced as a physics professor at Empire State University, wearing a gamma inhibitor device on his wrist to keep himself in human form. Peter Parker seeks him out for guidance as his own body undergoes a mysterious mutation, giving Banner a mentor role that eventually spirals into something far more dangerous once his own control begins slipping.

That loss of control plays out dramatically within the film’s marketing itself, with Banner warning in the trailer that if people see him without his inhibitor device, they should run. True to that warning, the device eventually comes off, unleashing the Hulk in a form far closer to his earliest, most destructive MCU appearances than anything audiences have seen since 2015’s ‘Avengers Age of Ultron.’

Hot Toys has also released an extremely detailed collectible figure based on this new version of the character, standing nearly fifty one centimeters tall and built from silicone material over an inner skeleton for a seamless joint design. The figure features a newly crafted head sculpt with two interchangeable face options and rolling eyeballs, alongside twenty eight points of articulation designed to capture the character’s movie-accurate expressions.

That level of collectible detail reflects just how significant this design shift is being treated internally at Marvel. Rather than simply tweaking small details, the studio scrapped earlier concepts, including designs for a Gray Hulk variant that ultimately did not make the final cut, in favor of committing fully to this more savage, greener take on the character.

The bigger question fans are now asking is whether this represents a lasting shift for the Hulk moving forward, or simply a temporary blast from the past contained to this single film. Given that Ruffalo’s future involvement in either ‘Avengers Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers Secret Wars’ has not been officially confirmed, how this transformation resolves could carry real weight for the character’s trajectory heading into Marvel’s next major crossover events.

Fans have spent roughly seven years hoping for the Savage Hulk’s return, with the Smart Hulk persona remaining a point of ongoing debate ever since its introduction in ‘Avengers Endgame.’ Whether Marvel commits to keeping this more dangerous version around for the long haul or treats it as a one-time story beat remains to be seen.
