The new The Mandalorian and Grogu brings back a mix of familiar and deep-cut Star Wars characters, including the return of Embo, a fan-favorite bounty hunter first seen in animation.

In the movie, Embo stands out as one of the most dangerous bounty hunters hired by the Hutt Twins. He is sent to capture Din Djarin after a conflict over Rotta the Hutt, and he briefly succeeds in taking him prisoner. Embo is shown as a skilled fighter who works with precision and calm control, making him one of the more memorable threats in the story.

His design and style are clearly inspired by classic samurai films. In particular, Favreau and Filoni have pointed to the influence of Seven Samurai and the Kyuzo warrior archetype when shaping Embo’s look and combat style. This connection fits his quiet but deadly personality, as well as his unique fighting method using a hat-like shield and ranged weapons.

Embo’s story in the film also builds on his long history in Star Wars canon. He originally appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where he worked as a bounty hunter during the Clone Wars era. In those stories, he teamed up with Jedi like Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi on different missions, showing that he has always been a flexible character who follows the highest bidder rather than any single cause.

Over the years, Embo has appeared across multiple Star Wars stories, including animation and expanded universe material. His loyalty has never been fixed, as he has worked with groups like the Republic, the Empire, and later the New Republic depending on the situation. This mercenary nature is still present in The Mandalorian and Grogu, where he ultimately changes sides during the final conflict, acting based on what benefits him most at the time.

There is also background lore that adds another layer to his character. Some stories suggest that by the time of the New Republic era, Embo had tried to leave behind his life as a bounty hunter and live peacefully on Felucia as a farmer. His return in the film shows that he has not fully escaped his violent past.

Embo’s first appearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars came in the episode “Bounty Hunters,” where he worked alongside other mercenaries to protect civilians from pirates. His companion, the anooba named Marrok, was introduced later and remains a key part of his identity. Their bond has been shown across several appearances in Star Wars animation.

In The Mandalorian and Grogu, Embo’s role may be smaller compared to the main characters, but his presence adds depth to the wider galaxy. It also highlights how the film pulls from different corners of Star Wars history to build its world. Whether this leads to more appearances in future projects is not confirmed, but his return has already sparked renewed interest in his story.
