She attributed the dramatic look to a fisheye lens and her own decision to stand too close to the camera, laughing through the whole response and landing on a firm “I’m not dead” as her closing statement. It was exactly the kind of self-aware humor that tends to defuse viral moments far more effectively than silence or defensiveness.

Wilde has not commented on the broader health speculation that surrounded the images, and her representatives have not issued any public statement on the matter. What she did choose to do instead, joining her brother in genuinely laughing about it, felt far more effective at shifting the narrative. ‘The Invite’, a romantic comedy co-starring Seth Rogen, Edward Norton, and Penélope Cruz, is set to open in theaters on June 26.
