Press tours have become their own genre of entertainment, and lately the junket circuit has been serving up moments juicier than some of the movies being promoted. Between spicy food challenges, lie detector tests, and puppy interviews, stars are increasingly asked to reveal a little more of themselves than a standard sit-down would ever allow.

That is exactly the arena Penélope Cruz and Olivia Wilde stepped into this week, and the pairing alone was enough to get fans talking. The two actresses have been everywhere together lately, trading stories about double dates, dysfunctional couples, and life on set as they make the rounds for their new film.

The moment currently lighting up social media came during their appearance on Allure’s Truth Serum series, where the co-stars answered revealing questions and shared candid confessions, from beauty habits and first impressions to behind-the-scenes stories. Somewhere between the confessions, the conversation drifted into genuinely forbidden territory, the question of whether Hollywood swinger parties actually exist.

Cruz had a nice answer: “What the fuck do I know? All I do is like school, football, dance, work, and kids. Why would I know? If they exist, they don’t tell me about it. I don’t know stories about that, but if you know, you’d better tell me. Because I like knowing everything. And I don’t repeat it, but I would like to know.”

Wilde then said, “I have only heard of one…” and then she whispered something to Cruz to which Cruz responded with shock.

Wilde then proceeded to explain: “I have never seen it with my own eyes, and I feel like, of course, there’s going to be rumors about everybody and everything, and we’ve heard that in the past…in the old times…they had like a lot of swinging parties.”

Clips of the exchange spread quickly across X, with one viral post racking up thousands of views as fans dissected Cruz’s shocked expression and begged for lip readers to step in. The name itself never made it to the microphone, which of course only made the internet more feral about it. It is the kind of unscripted beat that no publicist can manufacture, and it lands at the perfect moment for the movie the two women are out promoting.

The topic is not random, because their new film ‘The Invite‘ is built entirely around couples flirting with exactly those boundaries. The comedy stars Wilde and Seth Rogen as a troubled married couple whose relationship problems are exacerbated by the arrival of their frisky, enigmatic neighbors, played by Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz, for a dinner date, with the night going sideways through sexual revelations that test the boundaries of marriage.

Wilde also directs, marking her third feature behind the camera after the teen comedy ‘Booksmart’ and the controversy-riddled ‘Don’t Worry Darling’. This time the reception has been far warmer. The film premiered at Sundance, where A24 snatched it up for a hefty sum, and it was adapted from the 2020 Spanish film ‘The People Upstairs’ by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, the duo behind ‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’.

In the movie, Cruz plays Pína, a psychotherapist and sexologist who speaks with in-touch-with-herself harmony, opposite Norton’s laid-back former firefighter Hawk. So watching Cruz get scandalized by swinger gossip in real life, after playing the most unshockable woman at the dinner table, is a delicious bit of irony that fans have not missed.

The timing of the viral clip could hardly be better, since reviews for the film have been rolling in and they are largely glowing. NME called it a shrewd, savage and frequently hilarious take on coupledom, so wincingly accurate it is hard not to see yourself up on screen, while the Associated Press review described it as a deliciously entertaining chamber comedy and a welcome, modern twist on the drawing-room comedy of manners.

Even the more mixed takes have found plenty to praise. WBUR noted a roughly 40 minute stretch in the middle where the film really cooks, bouncing provocations off revelations with the grace of a great bedroom farce, singling out Norton and Cruz for bringing their transgressive nineties baggage into the stuffy apartment setting.

Between the strong notices and a press tour that keeps generating moments like this one, ‘The Invite’ is shaping up to be the grown-up conversation piece of the summer. As for the name Wilde whispered, that secret seems destined to stay between her, Cruz, and whoever throws the best parties in the Hollywood Hills.

So what do you think, is Hollywood really hiding a secret swinger scene, and whose name would leave Penélope Cruz that shook? Share your theories in the comments.
