‘The Invite’ Director Olivia Wilde Reveals the Surprising Pronunciation of Her Real Name
Olivia Wilde has revealed a surprising detail about her real last name and explained why she decided to change it when she became an actress. The Don’t Worry Darling star recently opened up about the unusual spelling of her birth surname and the challenges that came with having it while growing up.
During an appearance on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, Wilde explained that her real last name is Cockburn, but it is not pronounced the way many people would expect. She revealed that the correct pronunciation is actually “Coburn.”
“I’ll tell you something — and there’s no way you would know this — it’s pronounced ‘Coburn.’ Which I want you to imagine being a kid, when you’re… Because it’s spelled ‘Cockburn!’” Wilde said.
The actress explained that having such a unique surname was not always easy during her childhood. Because of the spelling, she often became the target of jokes from other kids. However, Wilde said she learned early on that being able to laugh at herself helped her deal with the attention.
She compared the experience to the story behind the song A Boy Named Sue, suggesting that having an unusual name helped shape her personality.
“It is very much like ‘[A] Boy Named Sue,’ you know what I mean? Like, it’s character building,” Wilde said.
Wilde also explained that she believes having a name that stands out can become part of a person’s identity. While she does not support bullying, she admitted that she eventually found humor in the situation and learned not to take every joke personally.
When Dax Shepard asked if she had ever been bullied because of her surname, Wilde said she discovered that reacting with humor made the situation easier. Instead of letting comments upset her, she chose to embrace the unusual nature of her name.
The actress also talked about her younger brother, Charlie, who shares the same last name. She joked that she was unsure whether having the surname Cockburn was more difficult for her or her sibling. “I don’t know, have we? I think having the last name looks like Cockburn in any city in any decade…” Wilde said.
Shepard noted that while society continues to change, a name like Cockburn would likely still attract attention and jokes. He described it as somewhat reassuring that some things remain universally funny, no matter how much time passes.
Wilde agreed that experiences like these can teach people important lessons while they are young. She explained that learning to laugh at herself helped her become more comfortable with something she could not change.
The actress eventually chose the stage name Olivia Wilde as a tribute to Oscar Wilde, the famous Irish writer and poet. She adopted the surname while pursuing her acting career, creating the name that audiences around the world now recognize.
Over the years, Wilde has become known for films including Tron: Legacy, Booksmart, and Don’t Worry Darling, as well as her work as a director and producer. While many fans know her by her Hollywood name, her recent podcast appearance gave audiences a rare look at the story behind her original surname and the personal experiences that came with it.
