Fans of the galaxy far, far away have had a busy summer, with Disney’s return to the Star Wars franchise finally hitting the big screen after years of anticipation. Following three beloved seasons of the Disney+ series, seeing Din Djarin and his tiny green companion back in a full theatrical adventure felt like a genuine cultural moment for longtime fans.

Since its theatrical debut in May, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ has continued generating conversation, from box office numbers to a noticeably mixed reception between critics and general audiences.

With that theatrical run winding down, attention has now shifted toward when fans will finally be able to bring the film home.

‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Streaming Countdown Begins as Disney+ Sets Its Sights on a Home Release Window

That wait is officially coming to an end. Disney has confirmed that ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ will be available on digital platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango, starting July 21, with a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release following on August 25. The digital and physical releases will also include exclusive bonus content not seen anywhere else, giving fans plenty of reason to revisit the film even if they already caught it in theaters.

Among that bonus material is a behind-the-scenes featurette focused entirely on the puppeteering work behind Grogu, offering a detailed look at just how much effort goes into bringing the character to life on screen. According to the featurette, it takes a team of six puppeteers working together to control isolated parts of Grogu, including individual movements for his eyelids and ears. Co-writer and producer Dave Filoni described one of the film’s central goals as pushing the limitations of what Grogu could do on screen, calling the character a great little actor in his own right.

The cast has been just as vocal about their connection to the character throughout the press for the film. Pedro Pascal, who returns as bounty hunter Din Djarin, praised the effects team working alongside Grogu, describing them as some of the most organic scene partners anyone could ask for, exclusively to PEOPLE. Sigourney Weaver, who makes her Star Wars debut in the film as Colonel Ward, echoed that sentiment, admitting she completely falls for Grogu’s face every time despite knowing there is an entire team of puppeteers surrounding him just out of frame.

Beyond the Grogu-focused content, the home release will also include audio commentary from director Jon Favreau, along with additional featurettes exploring how the film’s various new worlds and creatures were brought to life. The film introduces fans to fresh corners of the galaxy following the fall of the Empire, with the New Republic enlisting Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu on a new mission tied to rescuing Rotta the Hutt.

The voice cast rounding out the film includes Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt and Martin Scorsese in a role marking his own unexpected entry into the Star Wars universe. That combination of high-profile new additions alongside the franchise’s established fan favorites has kept buzz around the film steady throughout its theatrical run, even as reviews from critics and audiences have diverged noticeably on how well the story itself landed.

How Will You Watch 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' When It Releases at Home?

For collectors, Disney is also offering several premium physical editions alongside the standard release, including a Beskar Collector’s Edition featuring special packaging and metal poster artwork exclusive to the United States. Combined with the added bonus content, the home release appears designed to give dedicated fans plenty of incentive to pick up a physical copy rather than relying solely on streaming.

With a Disney+ streaming release still expected to follow sometime in the coming months, this digital and Blu-ray rollout marks the first real opportunity for fans who missed the film in theaters to finally catch up. Given how much anticipation built around the film’s theatrical debut, the early digital release date should give plenty of fans exactly what they have been waiting for.
