‘The Mandalorian’ Recap: Everything You Need to Know Before Watching ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’
Star Wars is finally back in theaters, and it is bringing its most beloved duo along for the ride. ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ arrives on May 22, 2026, marking the franchise’s first cinematic release since 2019, and it continues the story of Din Djarin and Grogu after three seasons of their Disney+ series.
Whether you binged all three seasons or drifted away somewhere around season two, catching up on the essentials has never mattered more. The movie is a direct continuation of the Disney+ series, making it a fairly unique release within the Star Wars franchise, and one that rewards viewers who know what the duo has been through together.
How Din Djarin and Grogu First Found Each Other
Din Grogu, widely known simply as Grogu, is a male Force-sensitive being belonging to the same mysterious species as the legendary Jedi Grand Master Yoda. He was born around 41 BBY and was raised at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant as a Jedi Initiate before surviving the Great Jedi Purge and being hidden away for decades.
Years later, Grogu was rediscovered by a remnant of the fallen Galactic Empire. Din Djarin, a Mandalorian bounty hunter raised by the secretive Children of the Watch sect, was hired to retrieve this mysterious target, only to find a small green alien hiding inside a hover pram.
Despite initially turning Grogu in for his beskar payment, Din experienced a change of heart and broke into the Imperial stronghold to rescue the child. Other hidden Mandalorians on Nevarro came to his aid, and from that moment the pair became fugitives, going on the run together across the Outer Rim.
The bond between them deepened quickly. When a Mudhorn nearly killed Din on Arvala-7, Grogu used the Force to save him, an act that rocked the bounty hunter to his core. This was the moment that transformed a professional assignment into something far more personal, and far more permanent.
The Quest for the Jedi and a Tearful Goodbye
By the end of season two, Din Djarin had assembled a team of allies, including Bo-Katan Kryze, Fennec Shand, and others, to battle Moff Gideon aboard his lightcruiser. Din bested the Moff in a duel with a beskar spear and claimed the Darksaber, the legendary weapon of Mandalorian leadership, though doing so unknowingly created a rivalry with Bo-Katan over succession.
With the Dark Troopers closing in, the allies were rescued by the legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker, who offered to take Grogu and train him in the ways of the Force. In one of the most emotionally devastating moments in recent Star Wars history, Din removed his helmet in violation of his strict Mandalorian code just so his adopted son could see his face, and then said goodbye.

The separation did not last long. During the events of ‘The Book of Boba Fett’, Grogu was presented with a choice by Luke Skywalker: take Yoda’s lightsaber and commit to the Jedi path, or choose the beskar chainmail Din had forged for him and return to his found-father. He chose the chainmail, choosing the Way of the Mandalorian over the Way of the Force, and reunited with Din Djarin for new adventures ahead.
This decision was enormously significant. Grogu still carries his Force abilities into every encounter, but his heart and his identity now belong to the Mandalorian way. It is a choice that continues to shape who he is heading into the film.
The Liberation of Mandalore and the Birth of the Clan of Two
Season three brought the duo face to face with their most personal challenge yet. Din Djarin sought redemption for removing his helmet by bathing in the living waters beneath the mines of Mandalore. During the final battle, Grogu shielded both Din and Bo-Katan Kryze from Moff Gideon’s destructive forces, demonstrating how far his abilities had grown.
Once Mandalore was reclaimed, the Mandalorian formally adopted Grogu as his son and apprentice, with the Armorer giving the child the name Din Grogu. The pair left Mandalore together so that the young foundling could complete his Mandalorian apprenticeship as an official member of Djarin’s clan.
After years on the run, Greef Karga gifted them a homestead on Nevarro as thanks for their help against raiding pirates. For the first time since their story began, the Clan of Two had a place to call home, a foundation from which their next chapter would begin.
What the New Republic Mission Means for the Film
By the time ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ begins, Din and Grogu are still operating as independent bounty hunters, but their ties to the New Republic have never been stronger. Djarin is fully aware of the threat the Imperial Remnant represents to his family, to the re-established Mandalorian presence on Mandalore, and to the galaxy at large, and has told his contacts in the Republic he is ready to work for their cause.
The film’s central mission sees the New Republic enlist Din Djarin and his apprentice Grogu to rescue Rotta the Hutt, son of the infamous Jabba, in exchange for information on a New Republic target. Jeremy Allen White plays Rotta, while Sigourney Weaver joins the cast as Colonel Ward, Djarin’s New Republic contact and a veteran of the Galactic Civil War.
Director Jon Favreau has been clear that the film is designed to be accessible even to viewers who never watched a single episode of the series. He described it as being like a new starting point, with an outstretched hand to anyone stepping into this corner of the galaxy for the first time. That said, longtime fans will find the story richly rewarding, built on every sacrifice, reunion, and quiet moment that made the show so beloved to begin with.
With Grand Admiral Thrawn still looming as a threat across the New Republic era and ‘Ahsoka’ season two on the horizon, the bigger picture of where this corner of Star Wars is heading remains tantalizing.
Whether ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu‘ begins to pay off that larger promise is the question every fan walking into theaters this weekend will be asking, and we would love to hear whether you think Mando and his little green apprentice are ready to carry the entire Star Wars franchise on their shoulders.
