‘The Mummy 4’ Is Bringing Back a Character Who Definitely Should Be Dead, and We Are Thrilled
Franchise nostalgia has become one of Hollywood’s most reliable playbooks, but there’s a special kind of excitement reserved for a reunion that brings back not just the beloved heroes, but the supporting players who made the original films feel so richly textured. That’s exactly the energy building around one long-awaited franchise revival.
Anticipation for this particular reboot has been simmering for years, fueled by cryptic hints from cast members and a genuine hunger among longtime fans for a proper continuation of a story many assumed had been left in the past. Now, casting news has arrived that’s turning that anticipation into full-blown excitement.
Kevin J. O’Connor and Oded Fehr are officially returning for the new ‘Mummy‘ movie, according to Deadline, joining previously confirmed franchise veterans Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah in what’s shaping up to be a genuine reunion. Numan Acar has also signed on to join the cast in an as-yet-undisclosed role.
Fehr will reprise his role as Ardeth Bay, the stoic leader of the Medjai, an ancient and secret society of elite warriors sworn to protect Egypt from the franchise’s resurrected antagonist, Imhotep. O’Connor returns as Beni Gabor, the sniveling former French Foreign Legion comrade of Fraser’s Rick O’Connell who ultimately betrayed him to serve as Imhotep’s groveling servant throughout the original 1999 film.
That casting choice carries a genuinely surprising wrinkle for longtime fans. Beni met a gruesome end in the first movie, trapped inside the collapsing city of Hamunaptra and devoured alive by flesh-eating scarab beetles, making his return one of the more unexpected reveals to come out of the production so far.
It remains unclear whether that death will be retroactively treated as a fake-out, addressed through flashbacks, or handled some other way entirely once the film’s plot details emerge.
Fehr’s return, meanwhile, comes as less of a surprise given his character survived both the original film and its 2001 sequel, ‘The Mummy Returns.’ Notably, this new installment appears set to disregard the events of 2008’s ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,’ the franchise’s divisive third entry, which saw Weisz step away from the role of Evelyn and Maria Bello take over instead.
Radio Silence directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for their work on ‘Ready or Not’ and the recent ‘Scream’ installments, are helming the new film from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. Plot details remain tightly under wraps, though Gillett has offered a tantalizing tease about the tone fans can expect. “It’s just really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome,” Gillett said in comments reported by Bloody Disgusting.
Producers William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein are overseeing the project through Project X Entertainment, with Fraser also stepping into an executive producer role alongside Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown and Denis Stewart. The original 1999 film, which reimagined the classic Universal monster movie as a sweeping action-adventure, went on to gross $417 million worldwide, cementing the franchise’s status as one of the era’s defining blockbusters.
With franchise veterans reuniting across the board and a wide theatrical release now locked in for October 15, 2027, this latest installment appears poised to deliver the kind of full-circle nostalgia fans have been hoping for since the franchise last graced theaters nearly two decades ago.
