The New York Knicks Star Jalen Brunson Will Play a Detective on ‘Law & Order: SVU’ and Fans Don’t Have Long to Wait
It has been quite a year for Jalen Brunson. The New York Knicks star helped end a decades-long championship drought, hosted ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and popped up at the Emmys. Now he is adding another credit to the list, with Brunson set to appear on ‘Law & Order: SVU.’
The crossover has been building for months. Brunson said in July that he would love to be on the long-running NBC drama, and Mariska Hargitay, a Knicks superfan, soon hinted that it was in the works. She had called him one of her bucket-list guest stars earlier in the year, along with Jamie Lee Curtis.
Now the role has finally come into focus. Brunson will play a detective in his episode, the fifth of the season, which airs Thursday, November 5, at 9/8c on NBC. His character was kept under wraps when the casting was first announced, which left room for speculation that he could play himself.

Cameras rolled in September, when Brunson and Hargitay were photographed together on set in Brooklyn on September 16. Hargitay teased the moment online with a playful nod to the Knicks’ starting lineup. NBC made the casting official the next day.
The pair have been friends for years, and their TV chemistry was already on display. Brunson appeared opposite Hargitay in the pre-taped opening of the 78th Emmy Awards, which she hosted. The sketch joked about the Knicks’ title-clinching tip-in by OG Anunoby in Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs.
Brunson is 30 and is the Knicks guard who was named NBA Finals MVP after the team won its first championship in 53 years. After the win, he said he would try to get on ‘SVU’ during the offseason. It turned out he meant it.
His offseason has been a media tour. Besides the Emmys and ‘SVU,’ he hosted the 52nd season premiere of ‘Saturday Night Live’ on September 26 and made appearances in WWE programming. The Knicks open their title defense on October 20 against the Philadelphia 76ers, and the November 5 air date falls on an off night for the team.
Reports say the episode is titled “Forsaken,” and it counts as the franchise’s 599th installment. That puts it right before the series’ milestone 600th episode, which is expected to bring Christopher Meloni back as Elliot Stabler. Hargitay will also direct that milestone episode.
Details on the case are scarce. The ‘SVU’ season has leaned into darker, more personal stories for Captain Olivia Benson, who has been described as disillusioned with the justice system. A fresh face from the NYPD would fit neatly into that world.
Brunson joins a long list of famous names to pass through the show’s squad room. The series has built a reputation for splashy cameos, and this season alone has teased Meloni’s return and the comeback of Stephanie March as Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot, who is due back on December 3.
For a show that is the longest-running primetime drama in television history, the casting is also a smart move for ratings. It pulls in sports fans who may not normally watch, and it gives New Yorkers a hometown hero in a New York-set procedural. It is also a nice reward for Hargitay, who has been a very public Knicks supporter.

Playing a detective is a natural fit for a cameo. It allows him to share scenes with the regular cast without taking over the story, and it keeps the focus on the case. If the footage making the rounds online is any indication, he is dressed in a plain jacket and appears in a busy public setting, with Hargitay in the background.
This is also Brunson’s scripted acting debut, which adds a layer of curiosity. After the comic timing he showed on ‘SNL,’ fans are eager to see how he handles a dramatic scene. The bigger test may be whether he can keep a straight face next to Hargitay.
