‘The Odyssey’ Director Christopher Nolan Teases a Horror Movie, Says He Just Needs the Right Idea
Christopher Nolan has spent most of his career making sci-fi epics, war dramas, thrillers, and superhero movies, but it sounds like horror could eventually be next on his list. After finishing work on ‘The Odyssey,’ the Oscar-winning director says he has become even more interested in making a horror film. The only thing stopping him is finding the right story.
Nolan shared his thoughts during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting ‘The Odyssey.’ The conversation covered everything from the film’s record-breaking debut to his future plans, and horror was one of the biggest topics. When asked if making ‘The Odyssey’ had satisfied his interest in horror, Nolan made it clear that it had done the opposite.
“It very much whets my appetite for more. But I’ve always believed that horror as a genre has to be approached very carefully from a conceptual point of view. In other words, you have to have an amazing idea.”
That answer will likely excite fans who have wanted to see Nolan tackle the genre for years. Even though he has directed films filled with tension and suspense, he has never made a full horror movie. Many of his films contain dark moments, but they have always belonged to other genres. The interviewer pointed out that ‘The Odyssey’ already includes several horror elements, something Nolan agreed with in a lighthearted way.
“They don’t need to beg me to tell a horror story anymore. Just buy a ticket.” Still, Nolan explained that creating a horror movie is not about finding new filmmaking techniques or special effects. For him, everything starts with the story.
He said a horror film needs an idea strong enough to carry the entire experience. Nolan even used Brian De Palma’s ‘Obsession’ as an example of a movie built around a powerful concept. “It’s not about the technical side. It’s not about what technical itches I would have to scratch. It’s about story. So I’m always looking.”
That approach fits Nolan’s filmmaking style. Throughout his career, he has focused on original concepts and stories that challenge audiences. Whether it was dreams inside dreams in ‘Inception,’ time manipulation in ‘Tenet,’ or the moral questions raised in ‘Oppenheimer,’ Nolan has always built his movies around a central idea rather than visual spectacle alone.
