John Leguizamo Reveals Why Christopher Nolan Chose Him for ‘The Odyssey’ Role

John Leguizamo has spent four decades building a career filled with memorable performances, but his role in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ gave him a chance to show a side of himself audiences rarely see. The actor plays Eumaeus, the loyal servant of Odysseus, a character whose emotional journey becomes one of the most personal parts of the movie.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Leguizamo opened up about why he believes Nolan chose him for the role and why the filmmaker saw something in him that many others had overlooked.

For much of his career, Leguizamo said he often felt limited by the types of roles offered to him. He explained that being a Latino actor sometimes meant being pushed toward certain character types instead of being given opportunities to play more emotional and complex figures.

“It’s as if, because I’m a Latin man, I always have to play the villain or the aggressor or a perp,” Leguizamo said.

That is part of what made Nolan’s decision so surprising to him. Instead of casting him as a dangerous or aggressive character, Nolan saw him as someone who could bring loyalty, sadness, and humanity to Eumaeus.

Leguizamo admitted that even he was unsure why Nolan had chosen him for the role at first. During his conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, he said he never expected the director to view him as the right person for such a quiet and emotional character.

“I don’t know. I don’t know either!” Leguizamo said when asked why he thought Nolan picked him. The actor explained that Nolan described Eumaeus as “the most loyal character in Western literature,” and that idea immediately connected with him. Leguizamo said loyalty is something that has always been important in his own life, especially through his connection to family and culture. “Loyalty to me is such a huge, huge virtue for me,” he said.

That personal connection helped Leguizamo build his version of Eumaeus. While the character is not one of the most famous figures from Homer’s original story, Nolan expanded the role and gave him a much bigger emotional purpose in the film.

Leguizamo said playing someone who felt closer to himself made the performance easier because he could draw from real experiences rather than simply creating something from scratch. “The emotions come easier. Choices come easier,” he explained.

The actor also praised Nolan’s directing style, saying the filmmaker creates an environment where performers feel comfortable being vulnerable. According to Leguizamo, Nolan’s approach helped him reach emotional places he had never explored before on screen.

“Working with Chris Nolan, he’s so present because he stands right behind the camera,” Leguizamo said. “You feel really seen. I was able to tap into these really difficult, painful emotions from the depth of my soul.”

Leguizamo also explained that Eumaeus represented a different challenge because the character is defined by years of waiting, loyalty, and emotional pain. The actor said the moment when Eumaeus finally reunites with Odysseus became one of the most intense scenes of his career.

“It was so intense for me. I’ve never really been that vulnerable,” he said. For Leguizamo, Nolan’s casting choice was more than just a career opportunity. It was a chance to prove that actors can continue discovering new sides of themselves no matter how long they have been in the industry.

With ‘The Odyssey’ becoming one of Nolan’s most ambitious projects yet, Leguizamo believes the director saw something in him that perfectly matched the heart of the story: a character built around loyalty, love, and sacrifice.
