‘The Odyssey’ Fans Just Realized Where They Know This Mysterious Prophet From

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is already one of the biggest movie stories of the summer, but audiences have found another reason to talk about it. John Leguizamo’s role as Eumaeus has caught the attention of viewers, with many fans suddenly realizing they know the actor from somewhere very different.

The 66-year-old actor plays Eumaeus, a blind man who remains close to Odysseus’ family while the legendary king is away from Ithaca. Leguizamo brings a serious and emotional performance to the role, but some moviegoers have struggled to separate him from one of his most famous characters.

That character is Sid the sloth from the Ice Age movies.

One viewer joked on social media, “The Odyssey was fking amazing yes but there was one scene where John Leguizamo yelled something and all I heard was Sid from Ice Age and I had to stop myself from laughing hard as fk in the theater.”

Another fan was even more surprised, writing, “John Leguizamo is Sid the sloth?? My life just changed.”

It is an understandable reaction. Leguizamo has voiced Sid throughout the Ice Age franchise, giving the animated character his instantly recognizable voice. Seeing him in a huge Christopher Nolan epic is a very different experience.

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, and follows his long journey home after the Trojan War. His trip takes around 10 years and puts him face to face with legendary creatures and characters, including the Cyclops, Circe, Calypso and the Laestrygonians.

Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus’ wife, while Tom Holland appears as their son, Telemachus. Leguizamo’s Eumaeus is part of the story happening back in Ithaca as Odysseus struggles to return to his family.

The film has also given Leguizamo a very unusual experience behind the camera. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor explained that his character’s eye effects left him unable to see properly for much of the day.

“Not being able to see for 12 to 14 hours a day, like I couldn’t see my phone, I couldn’t read, I couldn’t call,” Leguizamo said.

He explained that the experience became so difficult that he needed help moving around the set.

“I had to be taken to the bathroom, I had to be brought back. I had to be taken to eat.”

The actor also said the experience left him alone with his thoughts for long periods.

“When I was alone, I just had to be inside my head because that’s all I had. Too much time with my own thoughts. It’s a dangerous thing.”

Meanwhile, The Odyssey itself is already making a huge impact at the box office. The movie reportedly earned close to $350 million worldwide after its first week in theaters, giving it a strong chance of eventually reaching the billion-dollar mark.

The film runs for 173 minutes and was shot across locations in Greece, Morocco, Sicily, Iceland and Scotland. Nolan also filmed the movie using large-format cameras, giving audiences the option to experience it in formats including IMAX 70mm.

For fans, though, one of the biggest surprises may simply be seeing Sid the sloth himself standing alongside Matt Damon and Tom Holland in Nolan’s massive new epic.
