‘The Odyssey’ Has Recovered Its Entire Budget in Just Two Days

Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic arrived in theaters carrying one of the steepest price tags of his career, and for a three-hour, R-rated adaptation of an ancient Greek poem with no built-in franchise audience, that kind of budget came with real risk attached. Just days into release, though, ‘The Odyssey’ already looks like it is putting any concerns about that investment firmly to rest.

According to tracking reported by Deadline, the film’s worldwide box office has reached an estimated 257.8 million dollars in its opening weekend alone, a number pulled from a 120.5 million dollar domestic debut combined with 137.3 million dollars across 73 international markets. That global figure marks the best opening of Nolan’s entire career, surpassing his previous personal best set by ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, which opened to roughly 198 million dollars worldwide.

Domestically, that 120.5 million dollar total includes a 51.2 million dollar opening day that folded in the film’s 17.6 million dollar Thursday preview haul, itself the best previews total of the year according to Variety. That domestic number represents the best live action debut of 2026 so far, an ‘A’ CinemaScore from opening night audiences, and a new career high for Matt Damon as a leading man, easily surpassing his previous record set by 2007’s ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ at 69.2 million dollars.

Given that the film reportedly cost 250 million dollars to produce, with marketing costs pushing the total break-even point closer to 375 million dollars according to Yahoo News, a single opening weekend haul approaching 258 million dollars puts the film within striking distance of profitability before its theatrical run has even made it through its first full week.

That kind of pace, recovering the bulk of a quarter-billion-dollar production budget in the very first days of release, is a genuinely rare feat for an original story without any existing franchise built in.

Premium formats have played an outsized role in driving that fast start. According to Cosmic Book News, premium large format and IMAX screens accounted for 52 percent of the film’s total business, with every one of its top ten grossing theaters featuring either an IMAX or true 70mm screen.

The TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, which recently installed a new 70mm IMAX screen specifically ahead of the film’s release, emerged as the single highest-grossing venue in the entire country.

Internationally, the film also posted Nolan’s biggest ever foreign debut, becoming his top opening of all time in 45 separate markets including France, Italy, Spain, and Brazil, while also marking Universal’s single biggest opening ever in 11 different countries. Overseas, it ranks as the second biggest R-rated launch in box office history, trailing only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s 233.3 million dollar debut.

With reviews continuing to praise the film’s scale and Rotten Tomatoes scores sitting among the best of Nolan’s career, ‘The Odyssey’ looks positioned to keep climbing well past its opening numbers in the weeks ahead. For a film that leaned entirely on Nolan’s name and an ensemble cast rather than any pre-existing intellectual property, recouping this much of its budget this quickly is an emphatic answer to any doubts about the risk the studio took on.
