‘The Odyssey’ Is Closing in on a Billion Dollars, and Christopher Nolan Might Be Chasing an Even Bigger Record
Christopher Nolan has built a career out of turning ambitious, hard-to-sell concepts into box office events, but even by his standards, ‘The Odyssey’ has become something of a phenomenon. The three-hour, R-rated retelling of Homer’s ancient epic wasn’t exactly a slam-dunk pitch on paper, yet it has spent the past several weeks proving doubters wrong at nearly every turn.
The film opened to the biggest global debut of Nolan’s career, and rather than fading the way most tentpoles do after their first weekend, it has continued climbing at a pace that’s caught the industry off guard. Even with a new Marvel blockbuster eating into its theater count, ‘The Odyssey’ has kept finding new gears.
‘The Odyssey’ has now passed $911 million worldwide and is tracking toward a $1.4 billion overall total by the end of its theatrical run.
That kind of trajectory would be remarkable for any film, let alone one carrying an R rating and a nearly three-hour runtime built around a 2,700-year-old poem. The film has already become just the fourth 2026 release to clear the $900 million mark globally, joining a small group of titles that includes ‘Toy Story 5,’ ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ and ‘Michael.’
What makes the run even more striking is how it happened. Before its third weekend even began, ‘The Odyssey’ had earned roughly $700 million worldwide, meaning it added somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 million in just a few days, a surge that came even as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ took over a significant chunk of the theaters the film had previously been playing in.

That resilience has fueled increasingly bold projections about where ‘The Odyssey’ could ultimately land. The Hollywood Handle reports that the film is now expected to earn between $1.4 billion and $1.5 billion globally by the end of its run, a total that would put it in position to overtake ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
That record currently belongs to 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which finished its run with $1.338 billion worldwide after opening to $205 million domestically, itself a record-setting start for an R-rated release. For ‘The Odyssey’ to surpass that number would mark an extraordinary outcome for a film built around classical mythology rather than a built-in superhero franchise.
Much of that staying power has been attributed to unusually strong word of mouth and a critical reception that ranks among the best of Nolan’s career, with the film holding a 94 percent Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Premium formats have also played an outsized role in the film’s success, with Imax screenings alone accounting for a substantial share of its box office both domestically and internationally.
‘The Odyssey’ still has significant runway left in its release calendar, including a China debut that hadn’t yet happened as of its third weekend, giving the film another major market through which to pad its already historic total. If the film’s overseas performance continues to track the way Nolan’s recent releases typically have, that additional bump could push the final number even closer to the high end of current projections.
Whether ‘The Odyssey’ ultimately claims the R-rated box office crown or simply cements itself as one of Nolan’s biggest commercial triumphs, its run has already reshaped what audiences and studios thought was possible for a serious, mid-budget epic in the current theatrical landscape.
Do you think The Odyssey will become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time?
