‘The Odyssey’ Is Rewriting Christopher Nolan’s Box Office History Overseas

Christopher Nolan has built a career on box office runs that refuse to follow the typical playbook, and South Korea has become one of the clearest examples of that pattern playing out in real time. Since debuting in the country earlier this month, ‘The Odyssey‘ has consistently defied the usual front-loaded box office curve that even the biggest blockbusters tend to follow.

The film’s mythological retelling of Homer’s epic poem, led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, has turned into one of Nolan’s most durable international performers to date. Rather than fading after its opening frame, the movie has continued climbing week over week in one of the world’s most competitive theatrical markets.

That momentum reached a new milestone over South Korea’s recent holiday weekend, where ‘The Odyssey’ pulled in $4.8 million on the country’s Monday holiday, marking the biggest second-Monday performance for a Hollywood film in Korean box office history. That single-day total actually rose 138.5% compared to the film’s opening Monday, a jump fueled by strong word of mouth alongside the holiday boost.

With that surge factored in, the film has now crossed $40 million cumulatively in Korea, racking up nearly 5.2 million admissions in just thirteen days since its release. That pace has already allowed ‘The Odyssey’ to surpass the entire $39 million domestic run of Nolan’s own ‘Inception’ in South Korea, making it the director’s second highest-grossing film in the market to date.

The film’s admissions total has also now overtaken ‘Aquaman’s’ five million total admissions in Korea, positioning ‘The Odyssey’ to enter the all-time top forty admissions list for Hollywood films in the country. That milestone puts the film on track to potentially surpass both ‘Joker’s’ 5.3 million admissions and ‘Black Panther’s’ 5.4 million total admissions in the market.

‘The Odyssey’ had already dethroned ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ from the top of the Korean box office chart during its opening weekend, pulling in more than 1.3 million admissions right out of the gate. Rather than losing steam against one of the year’s biggest superhero releases, Nolan’s epic has continued outpacing Spider-Man’s own week-over-week performance in the same market ever since.

That consistency carries extra significance given how differently the two films are positioned. While ‘Brand New Day’ benefits from built-in franchise recognition, ‘The Odyssey’ has sustained and even grown its momentum largely on the strength of reviews and audience word of mouth, a considerably rarer feat for an original, R-rated epic going up against established superhero intellectual property.

The film’s success in Korea adds to an already remarkable global run that has seen ‘The Odyssey’ become Nolan’s biggest worldwide opening weekend ever, alongside record-setting IMAX performance across international markets. With the film’s Korean box office run still going strong nearly two weeks into its release, ‘The Odyssey’ shows no signs of slowing down as it continues climbing the country’s all-time admissions charts.

For a filmmaker already known for delivering unusually strong holds at the box office, this latest chapter in South Korea represents yet another example of Nolan’s ability to turn an original film into a genuine theatrical event.

How high do you think The Odyssey can climb on South Korea's all-time Hollywood admissions chart?
