Hayden Panettiere’s Death Takes a Shocking Turn as Overdose Evidence Emerges
New details have emerged following the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, with TMZ reporting that medication used to treat opioid overdoses was found inside the South Carolina apartment where she died.
According to sources in Greenville, South Carolina, Narcan was discovered at the residence. Narcan is a medication commonly used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. TMZ reports that the device used to give the medication was found on a mattress inside the apartment.
The discovery does not, however, establish that Panettiere died from an overdose. It is still unclear who, if anyone, received the Narcan.
TMZ says first responders at the scene referred to an possible overdose while communicating with dispatch. They also reported that CPR was being performed. The information came from emergency communications reviewed by TMZ.
There is another detail that has added uncertainty to the situation. Two ambulances reportedly responded to the apartment, which may suggest that more than one person needed medical attention. According to TMZ, neither ambulance transported anyone from the residence.
Emergency crews also reportedly used epinephrine at the scene. The drug, also known as adrenaline, is often used during attempts to restart the heart in cases of cardiac arrest. This appears to be consistent with the initial 911 call, which reportedly involved a woman who was believed to be in cardiac arrest.
Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:32 p.m. Sunday, according to TMZ. The exact cause and manner of her death have not been established in the information currently available.
Another person connected to the case is Panettiere’s longtime on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson. TMZ reports that Hickerson had been staying at the residence. He is from the Greenville area, but the outlet says it has not been able to reach him since news of Panettiere’s death first broke.
Hickerson spoke with TMZ in May about his relationship with Panettiere. During that conversation, he spoke warmly about the actress but also acknowledged that he believed she would be better off without him.
He said he wanted to see Panettiere “flourish.”
The new information surrounding the apartment has raised questions about what happened before emergency crews arrived. However, the presence of Narcan alone does not confirm an overdose, and the reason it was there or who may have received it remains unclear.
Authorities will ultimately have to determine what caused Panettiere’s death. Until official findings are released, reports about an overdose should be treated as unconfirmed.
The actress, known for roles in shows and films including “Heroes” and “Nashville,” was 35 years old. Her death has prompted an outpouring of attention from fans and fellow performers, while investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding her final hours.
