‘The Odyssey’ Star Zendaya Proves She’s a Christopher Nolan Superfan by Explaining ‘Interstellar’ With a Cardboard Box
Zendaya has made no secret of how much she admires Christopher Nolan, and she recently showed fans just how deep her love for the filmmaker’s work really goes.
While promoting Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, where she plays Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare, Zendaya shared a hilarious but impressive piece of proof that she has been a longtime Nolan fan. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she revealed a home video of herself explaining the plot of Nolan’s 2014 sci-fi film Interstellar using a cardboard box.
The video, which was recorded by her husband Tom Holland, showed Zendaya sitting on the floor of her home with actress Hunter Schafer, breaking down the complicated story of astronauts traveling through space, time, and a mysterious wormhole.
Before showing the clip, Zendaya joked that she was ready to help anyone who struggled to understand the movie. “Anybody who needs help, I got you,” she told Jimmy Fallon.
According to Zendaya, the original recording was much longer than what viewers saw on the show. Fallon mentioned that the clip had been shortened, and Zendaya admitted that she had already edited it down before sending it over. “I cut it down before I sent it to you. It was, like, 10 minutes long,” she said.
In the video, Zendaya uses a cardboard box to map out the events of Interstellar, explaining how Jessica Chastain’s character Murph connects to the larger story and how Matthew McConaughey’s Cooper ends up in the film’s emotional finale.
While explaining the movie, Zendaya confidently walks through some of its biggest twists, using different points on the box to represent key moments in the story. Hunter Schafer can be heard laughing during the explanation, while Holland also reacts from behind the camera.
Despite the jokes, Zendaya’s explanation clearly worked. By the end of the video, Schafer understood where the story was heading and followed along with the complicated timeline.
During her conversation with Fallon, Zendaya also confirmed that Interstellar remains her favorite Christopher Nolan movie. That love for Nolan’s work made joining The Odyssey an especially meaningful experience for her.

Zendaya explained that she was incredibly excited when she found out Holland was being considered for the role of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. Nolan originally contacted Holland about joining the film, and Holland was the one who later shared the opportunity with Zendaya.
“My heart was just so full. I was so excited for him,” Zendaya said. “Like, I didn’t even put myself in that equation at all.” However, once Holland received the script, Zendaya admitted she could not resist taking a look. “There’s a Christopher Nolan script in my house. What am I gonna do, you know?” she joked.
After reading the script, Holland encouraged her to look at it again, this time thinking about Athena’s role. “Read it again, but with Athena in mind,” Holland told her, according to Zendaya. Her reaction was immediate. “I was like, ‘Yo, stop it right now,’” she recalled.
Zendaya also spoke about her experience working with Nolan, describing it as a dream opportunity. She said she tried to stay calm around the director because she did not want her fan excitement to become obvious.
“I was just trying to play it cool, ya know? Because I’m a super fan, I can’t come on too strong,” Zendaya said.
She added that Nolan represents something special in filmmaking and that she would gladly take any chance to learn from him on set.
For Zendaya, The Odyssey was not just another major Hollywood project. It was a chance to work with a filmmaker she has admired for years, and her cardboard box explanation of Interstellar proves that admiration started long before she joined Nolan’s world.
