While DC Extended Universe is slowly counting its final few months of existence and DCU is getting ready to take over as the mainstream cinematic universe based on DC comics, Matt Reeves’ so-called Batverse is continuing its development according to plan. The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, was released last year to critical acclaim and commercial success of $770.9 million worldwide.

While Matt Reeves is working on the script for the movie’s sequel — The Batman – Part II — which is set to be released in the Fall of 2025, the spin-off series The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell, who is reprising the role of Gotham’s known crime lord, is currently in production and it’s set to arrive next year on MAX, a new streaming service which will replace the current HBOMax next month.

Warner Bros. Discovery recently revealed the first teaser for the upcoming series, and now, new on-set footage surfaced. The 15-second video shows the title star Colin Farrell as he’s getting ready to film the next scene. Considering how he was warming up for the scene, our guess would be that the scene would feature some fistfight. You can watch the video down here.

The Penguin: Bio, Origin & History

In The Batman movie, Colin Farrell was unrecognizable behind the makeup that turned him into Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, also known as the Penguin. The movie depicted the known supervillain before he was a notorious crime kingpin of Gotham, as he’s usually depicted in the comics. Critics and fans praised his performance. Farrell’s Penguin was also praised by Danny DeVito, who portrayed the character in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns in 1992.

The upcoming spin-off series is set one week after the events of The Batman movie, and it’s promising to take his character development to the next level, which will eventually turn Oz into the crime lord and one of Caped Crusader’s most notorious enemies. The first teaser for the series gathered mainly positive feedback from fans, with some citing that the series seems like a hybrid between the Gotham series and the legendary TV series Sopranos.

Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot is one of the most known villains in Batman’s rogue gallery. The character was created by Batman creators Bill Finger and Bob Kane, and the character first appeared in Detective Comics #58 in December 1941. Since then, the character has been adapted in many different media, with Denny DeVito’s incarnation in 1992’s Batman Returns and Paul Williams’ incarnation in Batman: The Animated Series being some of the most known adaptations.

The Penguin series is starring Colin Farrell in the title role, Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, and Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone. Created by Lauren LeFranc, with Matt Reeves serving as the executive producer, The Penguin series is set to premiere on Max in 2024.
