‘The Penguin’ Producer Confirms Another Spinoff Show Is in Development

DC fans have something to look forward to this week with ‘The Penguin’ series. This spinoff of Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ movie franchise is set in a separate universe, distinct from Gunn’s and Safran’s DCU. The show will be set one week after the events of ‘The Batman,’ with Falcone dead and The Penguin scrambling to fill the power vacuum with the help of Sofia Falcone.

Now it’s obvious that Reeves aims to expand upon this Epic Crime Saga further, as he recently discussed that ‘The Batman Part II,’ currently in development, will be set a week following the events of the show.

However, it seems that the franchise will get another TV show as Reeves and Clarke, the show’s producers confirmed.

The Direct recently sat down with executive producers Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark during a press event related to the show. Clark mentioned that another spinoff series from ‘The Batman’ saga is currently in development. To give some context, The Direct had initially asked whether elements of Arkham Asylum and Sofia Falcone’s character in ‘The Penguin’ were adapted from the Arkham Asylum spinoff series that HBO canceled earlier this year.

Reeves answered directly with “no,” clarifying that everything involving Arkham Asylum in the series was created specifically to advance Sofia’s story, with showrunner Lauren LeFranc leading the development.

“No, no. That story came from what Lauren [LeFranc] came up with as the backstory for Sophia Falcone. And really, what was chosen and what was used was solely driven by what would tell Sofia’s story… … The character that you’re meeting was actually formed through the crucible that is this experience in Arkham.”

“That was what dictated what we saw and so, and that was all. That was all what Lauren wanted to do within that space and what she did with it. So it wasn’t like, Oh, gee, do we want to give this part because we’re gonna do this in Arkham, or that, like, obviously we had a bit of Arkham in ‘The Batman’ and, you know, there may be other[s]…”

Clark then went on to confirm another spinoff in the development:

“But her ideas and the story elements that relate to [Sofia Falcone], those are all new ideas for her and have nothing to do with the other series that we’re continuing to do.”

The creatives were also asked about a potential legal drama series centered on Harvey Dent. While they didn’t provide a definitive answer, Reeves acknowledged that the journalist’s idea was in line with their discussions.
