‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’ Won’t Get a Season 2, But Frank Castle’s MCU Future May Be Even Bigger Than Fans Realize

Jon Bernthal has spent nearly a decade making Frank Castle entirely his own, and since the character’s brutal Netflix run came to an end, the demand for more has never really gone away. The arrival of ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill‘ on Disney+ marks the first time Marvel has given the skull-wearing vigilante a proper solo story inside the MCU, with Bernthal reprising his role alongside returning cast members Deborah Ann Woll and Jason R. Moore.

‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’ takes the form of a Marvel Television Special Presentation rather than a traditional episodic series, landing on Disney+ just seven days after the ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 finale. Bernthal co-wrote the special with director Reinaldo Marcus Green, the two having previously collaborated on HBO’s ‘We Own This City’ and the film ‘King Richard’.

For fans searching whether a second installment is on the way, the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no. The special was designed to fill in the gaps between ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, exploring what happened to Castle after his escape from Kingpin’s prison. It was conceived as a standalone piece from the very start, not a launching pad for a new ongoing series.

The creative team went to considerable lengths to ensure this would not be a diluted version of the character. Bernthal promised the special would be a “version that this character deserves” and not “Punisher-lite”, later describing it as a visceral, psychologically complex portrayal where all violence would carry a cost. Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum described the project in an interview with Entertainment Weekly as something built with all the pathos and emotion audiences want from a Frank Castle story, while also delivering with the focused intensity of a single, well-aimed shot.

As for what the team actually wants next, a second special is not the ambition being discussed. Director Green told The Direct that he and Bernthal are hopeful for a full theatrical Punisher film, one that could reach audiences worldwide, though Green acknowledged the decision ultimately rests with Marvel.

Bernthal’s next confirmed appearance as Frank Castle comes in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, with both Bernthal and Tom Holland having emphasized that the portrayal of the character would feel consistent across both projects. Initial reactions to ‘One Last Kill’ have been strong, with Bernthal’s performance and the action sequences drawing significant praise online.

With ‘One Last Kill’ now streaming and ‘Brand New Day’ set for later in the summer, Bernthal has teased that Frank is heading toward a version of himself capable of more than just personal vengeance, though he stopped short of revealing what is coming next. The question fans are really asking is not whether there will be a season two but whether the momentum builds toward something even larger.

If you have already watched ‘One Last Kill’, do you think the character has earned a full Punisher film on the big screen, or does the Special Presentation format actually suit Frank Castle better than a theatrical release ever could?
