‘The Rookie’ Season 9 Finally Has a Release Date, and It’s Bringing a New Spinoff Along for the Ride

ABC’s flagship police procedural has quietly become one of the network’s most reliable success stories, anchored by Nathan Fillion’s charm and a fanbase that keeps growing well past the show’s original demographic. What started as a mid-life-crisis premise about the oldest rookie in the LAPD has evolved into one of ABC’s longest-running dramas, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing down heading into its ninth season.

That momentum was reflected in April 2026, when ABC officially renewed the series for Season 9, a decision that came alongside a series order for a brand-new spinoff. Now fans finally have a concrete timeline for when both shows will hit screens. ‘The Rookie’ Season 9 is set to debut on ABC and Hulu in April 2027, followed by the premiere of its spinoff, ‘The Rookie: North,’ in May, giving the franchise back-to-back launches designed to build momentum across both series. The pairing sets up a natural runway for crossover storytelling, especially since both shows share creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley.

Season 9 picks up in the immediate aftermath of Season 8’s cliffhanger finale, which ended with fan-favorite couple Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen getting engaged only to be abducted moments later after being injected with a mysterious substance. Hawley has confirmed the new season will dive straight into the fallout from that abduction, while also exploring Wesley Evers’ evolving role investigating a serial killer’s lawyer.

‘The Rookie: North’ follows a similar premise to its predecessor, this time centered on Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a man who believed his midlife wasn’t worthy of a crisis until a violent home invasion pushes him to join the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie. Set across both the urban coast and rural forest terrain of Washington state, the show promises a slightly different tonal backdrop than the original series’ Los Angeles setting.

The spinoff’s cast has continued expanding in the months since its series order, with Chris Sullivan, Karen Fukuhara, Froy Gutierrez, Janet Montgomery, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson all joining as series regulars. Most recently, Curtis Lum was added in a recurring role as Officer Charley Furst, further rounding out the ensemble ahead of the spinoff’s debut.

Production on Season 9 of the mothership series began on July 21, 2026, giving the crew enough lead time to prepare the season’s signature action sequences and tactical storylines. The original series stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, alongside Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. With both shows now locked into a spring 2027 rollout, fans have a clear runway to look forward to, even if it means a longer wait than the franchise’s usual January premiere pattern.
