The Russo Bros.’ Answer to Captain Marvel and Wanda Appearing in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Couldn’t Be Any Better

Marvel Studios has spent years perfecting the art of the surprise cameo, and with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ shaping up to be one of the studio’s biggest ensemble efforts yet, fans have been combing through every scrap of casting news for clues about who else might show up.

That scrutiny has only intensified as the film’s marketing has rolled out, especially given how many familiar faces have already been confirmed across its sprawling roster. Yet a handful of notable absences from the official cast list have kept speculation alive, particularly around two characters with deep ties to the franchise’s past.

Now, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have added fresh fuel to that speculation. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight at San Diego Comic-Con, the filmmakers were asked directly about the possibility of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch appearing somewhere in the film, and their response was anything but a denial.

When ET’s Denny Directo pressed the directors on whether more surprises could still be coming beyond the already stacked cast, specifically naming Captain Marvel and Wanda as possibilities, Anthony Russo kept his answer short and pointed: “There are always more surprises.” Joe Russo followed that up by adding, “And so, stick around as always for that end credit scene.”

That kind of response leaves plenty of room for interpretation, and it fits a broader pattern the Russos have leaned into throughout the film’s promotional cycle. Marvel has built an entire tradition around hiding major reveals until opening weekend, and this response suggests ‘Doomsday’ won’t be breaking from that formula anytime soon.

The timing of these comments is notable given how much uncertainty has surrounded both characters’ involvement in the project. Neither Larson’s Captain Marvel nor Olsen’s Scarlet Witch appeared among the major names revealed during Marvel’s initial cast announcement, a surprising omission considering how central both characters have been to the broader Multiverse Saga storyline.

Reports have since suggested that reshoots may have added both characters back into the mix, alongside Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau. It’s also been widely reported that Scarlet Witch could appear as one of Doctor Doom’s followers within the film, potentially wearing a costume that conceals her identity for much of her screen time.

That kind of concealment would explain why confirmation has remained so difficult to pin down, even with reshoots reportedly already having taken place. It also lines up neatly with the Russos’ now-familiar strategy of teasing possibilities without committing to specifics on the record.

Given how significant both characters have been across the MCU’s recent output, from Wanda’s pivotal arc in ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ to Larson’s continued presence as one of the franchise’s most powerful heroes, their potential inclusion would carry real narrative weight rather than serving as a simple cameo for cameo’s sake.

For now, fans are left parsing every carefully worded response from the Russos as the film’s release date draws closer. Whether Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch actually make it into the final cut remains one of the most closely guarded secrets of the entire project.
