Anthony Hopkins once went through an unusual casting situation involving a role that ultimately became tied to Marlon Brando in a very unexpected way. Hopkins had been set to play Jor-El, the father of Superman, in the planned film Superman: Flyby.

At that time, the project was being developed with a script by J.J. Abrams and was moving through different creative versions before eventually falling apart and being reworked into what later became Superman Returns.

During this period of development, Hopkins was attached to the role and expected to bring his usual dramatic weight to the character. However, the production changed direction. Instead of continuing with a new performance, the filmmakers decided to use existing material from Marlon Brando’s earlier appearance as Jor-El in the 1978 Superman film.

Brando had already passed away by the time these decisions were being made, but the studio chose to include him through archived footage and digital effects. This meant that Hopkins’ version of the character was no longer needed.

He has also appeared in newer productions such as Locked, a psychological thriller produced by Sam Raimi, where he plays a tense and controlling figure involved in a high-stakes situation inside a confined space. The film has been noted for its dark tone and Hopkins’ intense performance style.

Looking ahead, Hopkins is attached to The Species, a historical drama focused on Charles Darwin. In this project, he is set to star alongside Charlotte Rampling in a story that explores science, belief, and discovery.

The unusual Superman casting story remains one of the more strange footnotes in his long career, showing how even established actors can be affected by shifting studio decisions and unexpected creative changes.
