New details are out for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3, and they point to some familiar faces returning in a surprising way. The information comes from showrunner Seth Hoffman, as reported by RadioTimes after the season premiere at the 65th annual Festival de Television de Monte-Carlo.

Hoffman confirmed that the new season will bring back characters fans have not seen for a long time. He explained that the show will include a special non-canon episode that explores an alternate reality where the zombie outbreak never happened. In this episode, several past characters from The Walking Dead universe will appear again, even though they are not part of the current story timeline.

He said, “I hope I can look at it from a fan’s perspective and I thought, ‘One thing that fans would want to see in this spin-off is characters that maybe we haven’t seen for a long time’.” He also added, “If you were to do an alternate reality episode where the apocalypse never happened, you could invite back some characters that haven’t been part of the franchise in a long time.” However, he made it clear that he cannot confirm which characters will return.

The idea behind the episode is to show what Maggie and Negan’s lives could have been like if the apocalypse never took place. Hoffman explained, “As I began to think about the episode more, the value from a series-wide perspective is that you get to see who Maggie and Negan would have been if the apocalypse didn’t happen.” He also said the story will look at whether the trauma they went through made them better or worse people in the end.

Outside of this special episode, season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City will continue the main story in Manhattan. Maggie and Negan are expected to work closer together than before as they try to build a safer life with a group of survivors. At the same time, new threats will rise, including the Dama and the New Babylon Federation. Their situation will stay dangerous, and trust between the two characters will remain a major part of the story.

According to RadioTimes, most characters in Dead City are original to the spin-off, except for Maggie, Negan, and Hershel. The show has also brought back small appearances from past characters before, such as Lucille and Annie, who appeared in earlier seasons. Other Walking Dead spin-offs have also done similar returns, showing that the franchise often brings back familiar names for special moments.

Fans are already guessing who might appear in the alternate reality episode. Possible returns could include people from Maggie and Negan’s past, such as Beth or Glenn, though nothing has been confirmed. The showrunner has only said that surprises will be kept secret until the episode airs.

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 will have eight episodes. It is set to premiere on Sunday, July 26 on AMC and AMC+. The alternate reality episode does not have a confirmed release spot yet in the season, but it is expected to be one of the most talked-about parts of the story when it arrives.
