‘Thunderbolts*’ Star Hannah John-Kamen Says Avengers: Doomsday’s Scale Is Bigger Than Anyone Expects
Marvel’s biggest crossover event since ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has been generating nonstop buzz ever since its massive Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, and the cast members lucky enough to have seen footage aren’t holding back their enthusiasm. With directors Anthony and Joe Russo returning to helm the sprawling ensemble film, expectations for scope and spectacle have never been higher.
That presentation brought together one of the largest gatherings of Marvel talent in the studio’s history, with Kevin Feige welcoming stars including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, and dozens more to the Hall H stage. Among that crowd was Hannah John-Kamen, reprising her role as Ava Starr, also known as Ghost, a character she first introduced in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ before returning in ‘Thunderbolts*’.
Hannah John-Kamen has described ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ as “absolutely incredible,” offering fans a glimpse into just how massive the film’s scope has become behind the scenes. Speaking about the sheer scale of the project, she said, “The scale is just so big. When you think it can’t get bigger — it can.”
John-Kamen’s comments echo similar sentiments from her fellow castmates, many of whom have struggled to find the right words to describe just how enormous this Avengers installment has become. David Harbour, who reprises his role as Alexei Shostakov, also known as Red Guardian, told Entertainment Tonight that the film dwarfs even his experience on ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5. Harbour said, “That movie is huge. I mean, I thought that Stranger Things [season] five was big, but this is kind of the biggest thing I’ve ever done.”
The film’s ensemble reads like a who’s who of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s past decade, blending characters from the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, X-Men veterans like Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto, and longtime Avengers stalwarts returning for one more mission. That crossover scale extends beyond just casting numbers, with the film reportedly weaving together storylines from multiple corners of the franchise that haven’t previously interacted on screen.
Beyond the sheer size of the cast, other actors have hinted at just how personal and emotionally significant this installment feels compared to previous Avengers outings. Vanessa Kirby, who debuted as Sue Storm in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, praised Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the franchise as Doctor Doom, describing his presence on set as a steadying force for the newer cast members. She said, “Robert’s never not been on set. He’s always there. He is our leader. We call him our Godfather. He’s looked after us.”
That sense of scale isn’t purely logistical, either. Reports from the Comic-Con presentation described an exclusive in-room look at footage from the film, during which Robert Downey Jr., in character as Doctor Doom, invited the entire audience to don masks and cloaks distributed at the panel, turning the presentation itself into something of a spectacle befitting the movie’s ambitions.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ the following December, Marvel is clearly positioning this two-film event as the culmination of years of interconnected storytelling across its recent slate.
