‘Thunderbolts*’ Star Julia Louis-Dreyfus Just Confessed She Never Actually Watched ‘Friends’

Sitcom rivalries have a way of lingering in pop culture long after the shows themselves have ended, and few pairings get brought up as often as ‘Seinfeld’ and ‘Friends.’ Both series anchored NBC’s legendary Thursday night lineup throughout the 1990s, and both left such a massive cultural footprint that fans still debate which show truly defined the decade.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has spent plenty of time reflecting on her ‘Seinfeld’ years lately, revisiting everything from her feelings about Elaine’s wardrobe to her general reluctance around reunion talk. This time, though, the conversation took an unexpected turn when the topic of ‘Friends’ came up directly.

Appearing on the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, Louis-Dreyfus admitted she was never actually a fan of ‘Friends’ at all. Speaking with host Dave “Lil Dicky” Burd, she said plainly that she didn’t really watch the show, adding that she’s only ever caught bits and pieces of it over the years.

Rather than chalking it up to any kind of rivalry, Louis-Dreyfus explained her absence from the ‘Friends’ fandom came down to timing and circumstance. She shared that she had both of her children while working on ‘Seinfeld,’ calling the experience of balancing a demanding show with a growing family unlike anything else she’d dealt with in her career.

She even joked about how visibly that period affected her on-screen presence at the time, noting that her pregnancies caused her weight to fluctuate noticeably throughout production. It’s a candid detail that adds context to just how little bandwidth she had left over for watching television outside her own set.

When Burd pressed further, asking whether she ever felt ‘Seinfeld’ was in direct competition with ‘Friends,’ Louis-Dreyfus pushed back on the idea entirely, pointing out that ‘Friends’ actually came along after ‘Seinfeld’ had already established itself. She noted that the earlier overlap in her career had actually been with ‘Cheers,’ not ‘Friends,’ complicating the tidy rivalry narrative that’s followed both shows for decades.

While Louis-Dreyfus may not have watched ‘Friends’ as it aired, she’s previously shown she wasn’t entirely immune to its cultural pull. In a separate appearance on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, she recalled feeling a pang of envy toward the show’s leading women, admitting she used to look at Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow and wish she’d leaned into a sexier look for Elaine rather than the character’s now-iconic curly hair and flowing dresses.

That same conversation found her only half-joking about wanting to go back and change Elaine’s entire aesthetic, even offering up a tongue-in-cheek apology to anyone currently bringing 90s fashion back into style. It’s a small but telling contradiction: she may not have tuned into ‘Friends’ week to week, but its cast still left an impression on how she viewed her own sitcom stardom at the time.
