A new take on the classic Toho monster story The Human Vapor is coming to Netflix, bringing a modern reboot of the legendary tokusatsu concept to a global audience.

The series is set to premiere on July 2 and was announced alongside a teaser trailer and key art released today. The project reimagines the original 1960 film in a completely new story while keeping its core idea of a man who can turn into gas.

The series is a collaboration between top Korean and Japanese creators and is backed by Toho, Netflix, and WOWPOINT.

According to production information shared with the announcement, the show aims to blend grounded storytelling with large-scale visual effects, using practical sets and modern CGI work to create a more realistic and intense tone. The VFX is handled by Shirogumi, the award-winning team known for their work on Godzilla Minus One.

The story is written and executive produced by Yeon Sang-ho, known for projects like Train to Busan, Hellbound, and Parasyte: The Grey. Direction comes from Shinzo Katayama, who has worked on darker human-focused dramas such as Gannibal. The creative team has described the series as a new interpretation rather than a direct remake, expanding the original idea into a modern thriller format.

At the center of the story is the Human Vapor, played by UTA in his acting debut. He was chosen from many candidates to bring a fresh and unknown presence to the role. His character is described as a man who can turn into gas and pass through any barrier, creating fear and chaos as he carries out planned attacks and challenges authorities.

The cast includes Shun Oguri as detective Kenji Okamoto, who is determined to track down the Human Vapor. Yu Aoi plays journalist Kyoko Kono, who is searching for the truth behind the mysterious events. Suzu Hirose and Kento Hayashi appear as livestreaming siblings caught up in the unfolding chaos. Yutaka Takenouchi also plays a former yakuza member who has become a company president, adding another layer to the story’s intersecting characters.
