Tom Cruise On Doing an Underwater Stunt in ‘The Final Reckoning’ That Involved Breathing in His Own Carbon Dioxide: “You have to overcome all of that while you’re doing it, and be present”

Tom Cruise is known for pushing the limits of action filmmaking, and his latest stunt in Tom Cruise is back with another daring stunt for his latest movie, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.”
This time, he performed an underwater scene that pushed his limits. The 62-year-old actor wore a special mask and suit for the sequence. He could only wear the gear for 10 minutes before risking hypoxia, a condition where the body doesn’t get enough oxygen.
Cruise explained that he was breathing in his own carbon dioxide during the stunt. “It builds up in the body and affects the muscles,” he said. “You have to overcome all of that while you’re doing it, and be present.”
The stunt is part of the eighth “Mission: Impossible” film, set to release later this year. Cruise is known for doing his own stunts, from climbing tall buildings to hanging off planes. This underwater scene took his dedication to a new level.
He had to stay focused while dealing with the physical strain of limited oxygen. The crew designed the gear to keep him safe, but it still came with real risks. Cruise said the challenge was not just surviving but making it look good on camera.
Director Christopher McQuarrie described the filming process as both terrifying and incredibly difficult. The scene was physically punishing for Cruise, and the challenge wasn’t just performing in such extreme conditions but also making sure the sequence looked chaotic yet readable on screen.
“He’s in a rotating structure filled with debris, and you had to find a way to make that environment look as chaotic and unhinged as humanly possible,” McQuarrie said. “But in a way that you could repeat, and that Tom could navigate, and survive.”
This isn’t the only dangerous stunt Cruise tackled for “The Final Reckoning.” He previously revealed that while filming another action sequence, which involved hanging off the side of a flying airplane, he repeatedly passed out due to lack of oxygen. “When you stick your face out [of an airplane], going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen,” Cruise explained. “So I had to train myself how to breathe.”
In my opinion, Tom Cruise’s drive to do these stunts is impressive but risky. At 62, he’s still going all out, which shows his passion for filmmaking. It makes the movie exciting, but I wonder how long he can keep this up without serious harm. His hard work pays off for fans who love the action. What do you think about Tom Cruise’s latest stunt?
