Tom Holland Addresses Whether Tobey and Andrew Are Part of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Tom Holland has revealed the story reason behind Peter Parker’s redesigned suit in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ and it turns out the answer is as emotionally satisfying as the design itself. In a behind-the-scenes clip shared by Sony Pictures, Holland explained that the new costume was created as a direct tribute to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s iconic designs, because this version of Peter Parker has now actually met both of them.
As Holland explained in the Sony promotional video, the creative team’s thought process was straightforward. In the featurette, he said the team asked, “What if we made a suit that was an homage to Tobey’s and Andrew’s designs, because now my Peter Parker has met those guys,” adding that they “kind of created a spider child of all three costumes” and went back to “that dumpster diver kid who’s retrofitting old tech.”
Holland was deeply involved in developing the new suit for ‘Brand New Day,’ researching which details fans liked most about the suits worn by Maguire and Garfield to inform the new design, including lowering the belt to give the impression of a longer torso and adjusting the boots similarly. Costume designer Sanja Milkovic Hays, who worked on ‘No Way Home,’ returned for this installment as well.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton has also been vocal about what the suit communicates visually. Cretton noted that the result is a suit where you can see “the human beneath the material,” emphasizing that the costume embraces its folds and wrinkles rather than hiding them, a deliberate departure from the more armored look of Peter’s earlier MCU appearances.
The costume change is inseparable from what Peter has been through since ‘No Way Home.’ Speaking with Complex, Holland said he loves the idea that Peter “wants to emulate these two older brothers, he respects them, and he noticed the small details on their suits, and he thought those details were really cool.” After losing everything, including his identity and everyone who knew him, Peter carrying those influences into his rebuilt life gives the visual choice real emotional weight.
The film also takes the tribute beyond aesthetics, with Peter developing the ability to generate organic webs from his wrists, just like Maguire’s version of the character in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, a new power that ties into the story’s broader arc about Peter’s abilities undergoing a potentially dangerous evolution.
The suit has already become one of the most discussed elements of the film’s marketing, with fans responding strongly to the raised webbing borrowed from Maguire’s suit and the sleeker silhouette that nods to Garfield’s. The film’s first trailer became the most-viewed trailer ever with 718.6 million views in 24 hours, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Deadpool and Wolverine.’
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opens in theaters on July 31, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. For a franchise that has always been defined by its suits, this one carries more narrative meaning than any that came before it.
