Tom Holland Loses Spider-Man Impersonator Contest — With Zendaya as One of the Judges
There is something poetic about the world’s most famous Spider-Man suiting up, entering a Spider-Man impersonator contest, and walking away without the trophy. Yet that is exactly what happened when Tom Holland secretly joined a competition organised by popular Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos, a stunt that has since captured the internet’s collective attention and sparked a wave of gleeful reactions from fans around the world.
The video, produced for Llanos’ YouTube channel, brought together five content creators dressed as the web-slinging Marvel hero to compete in a series of challenges designed to test agility, strength, reflexes, and acting ability. The participants were kept entirely in the dark about what was really coming. The contestants believed they were taking part in a standard competition and had no idea that Holland and Zendaya would later make their way into the event.
Holland entered the contest as a masked mystery finalist, blending in among the remaining competitors without giving away his identity. The ‘Spider-Man’ actor joined challenges that included recreating iconic superhero poses and demonstrating character mannerisms associated with the web-slinging hero. For a man who has spent nearly a decade embodying Peter Parker on the big screen, one might assume this would be an easy win. It was not.
The twist that has had the internet in stitches is not just that Holland lost, but who helped seal his fate. Zendaya joined the judging panel for the final stage of the competition. After watching the finalists perform, she delivered the deciding vote on who best embodied Spider-Man, saying “It’s a difficult decision. It really is. Everybody was so talented,” before selecting contestant number two as the winner. The real Spider-Man had been quietly eliminated by his own wife.
When Holland’s identity was finally revealed, the crowd reacted with surprise as it emerged that the actor had unknowingly lost a Spider-Man impersonation contest centred on portraying the very character he plays on screen. The moment became an instant highlight, a rare and genuinely funny slice of celebrity humility that felt completely unscripted precisely because it was.
Social media erupted. Many users laughed at the sheer absurdity of the situation, with fans joking that not even the actual Spider-Man could win a Spider-Man contest. Others praised Holland’s willingness to participate without expecting any special treatment, pointing to the moment as a reminder of his warmth and approachability with fans.
The timing of Holland and Zendaya’s appearance with Ibai Llanos was no accident. The pair were in Madrid as part of the promotional campaign for their upcoming film. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is scheduled to swing into theatres on July 31. The cast also includes Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo.
Following Doctor Strange’s spell at the end of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, the world has forgotten that Peter Parker exists. Four years later, Parker anonymously protects New York City as Spider-Man and investigates a powerful new threat while his superpowers undergo a surprising and potentially dangerous evolution. The stakes, in other words, could not be higher for Peter Parker on screen, which makes watching Holland cheerfully lose a costume contest in Madrid feel even more charming by contrast.
Zendaya has described working on the new film as an opportunity to imagine what her character MJ’s life has been like since audiences last saw her, keeping in mind that Peter is not a part of those memories or that life she may have wanted. Off screen, however, the couple appear to be enjoying every moment of this promotional run, and the Ibai Llanos video is proof that they are bringing genuine fun and personality to the campaign.
For a franchise that has always leaned into heart and humour, it is hard to imagine a better promotional moment than the star quietly entering his own lookalike contest and losing fair and square. It is the kind of story that reminds audiences why they fell in love with this version of Peter Parker in the first place, someone who never quite gets the easy win, even when he probably should.
