Tom Holland Reveals He Forced a Multi-Billion-Dollar Marvel Franchise to Delay Production After One Meeting With Christopher Nolan
Tom Holland has spent the better part of a decade balancing his commitment to Spider-Man with an increasingly ambitious slate of outside projects, but nothing tested that balancing act quite like the moment Christopher Nolan came calling for ‘The Odyssey’. What followed was a scheduling standoff involving one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, and Holland has now revealed just how close the two productions came to colliding entirely.
According to Holland, the trouble started almost immediately after his meeting with Nolan about playing Telemachus. He explained that the start date for ‘The Odyssey’ landed on the exact same date as production was set to begin on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, leaving him with a genuinely uncomfortable decision to make between two massive commitments.
Rather than turning Nolan down, Holland made the call himself, reaching out directly to Sony Pictures to ask whether the studio could push back its own multi billion dollar franchise to accommodate his schedule. Holland has since described that conversation as one he genuinely dreaded having, given the sheer scale of what he was asking a major studio to rearrange purely to make room for another film entirely.
Remarkably, Sony agreed. Holland has repeatedly credited Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman for making that call, calling him an absolute legend for being willing to shift the entire production schedule so Holland could commit to Nolan’s film first.
Speaking about Nolan’s reputation as a factor in that decision, Holland explained that studios trust his productions to stay on schedule and on budget, a track record that made Sony far more comfortable agreeing to the delay than they might have been for a less disciplined filmmaker.
That delay ended up paying off in a way nobody could have fully predicted. According to Holland, without that extra time created by pushing the Spider-Man production back, the film would not have been able to bring on director Destin Daniel Cretton, who needed additional months to develop the screenplay before he was ready to begin shooting. Holland has said he believes that extra development window helped shape ‘Brand New Day’ into a genuinely stronger film than it might have otherwise been.
Holland has been characteristically blunt about crediting Rothman for making the entire arrangement possible in the first place, stating plainly that without Tom, he would not have been able to make ‘The Odyssey’ at all. He has also pointed out the irony of the situation directly, noting that Rothman effectively moved an entire Spider-Man production just so Holland could be part of Nolan’s film instead.
That kind of scheduling gamble ultimately worked out for everyone involved. ‘The Odyssey’ reportedly wrapped production nine days ahead of schedule, reinforcing exactly the reputation for efficiency that convinced Sony to move in the first place, while ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ benefited from the additional runway to bring its creative vision fully into focus.

With both films now arriving in theaters just two weeks apart, ‘The Odyssey’ on July 17 and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ on July 31, Holland’s willingness to make that uncomfortable phone call looks like it paid off for both projects simultaneously.
