Tom Holland Reveals the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Pitch That Got Rejected
A new look at Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially been revealed through Empire magazine, and the latest details about the movie are giving fans a better idea of what to expect from Tom Holland’s next chapter as Spider-Man.
One of the biggest reveals is that Holland himself played a major role in shaping the story for the upcoming Marvel film.
According to Empire, the actor was invited into the writers’ room for the first time since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe nearly a decade ago. Holland explained that he regularly met with the creative team to pitch ideas and talk about where Peter Parker should go next.
“This is the first time in my tenure as Spider-Man that I was kind of welcomed into the writers’ room,” Holland told Empire. He added that the group would meet every couple of weeks to discuss ideas and future plans for the character.
One idea from Holland became a major part of the movie’s story. The actor suggested that Peter Parker’s powers should begin changing in strange and unpredictable ways. Holland jokingly came up with the phrase “Spider-Puberty” while pitching the idea to Marvel.
“My pitch when I came to the table with it was called ‘Spider-Puberty,’” Holland said. “What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing?”
The funny title may not have survived the studio meetings, but the core idea did. Holland admitted that Marvel immediately rejected the tagline itself. “‘Spider-Puberty’ was my tagline pitch to the studio — which was immediately shot down,” he said. “But they liked the kernel of the idea and it grew into what we have in the movie now.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following Doctor Strange’s spell, the entire world has forgotten who Peter Parker is. Peter is now completely alone and living anonymously in New York City while continuing his work as Spider-Man.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously explained that this film focuses more on the classic version of Spider-Man. Peter is no longer surrounded by Avengers or school life. Instead, he is operating as a neighborhood hero, living in a small apartment and dealing with street-level crime.
The movie also explores Peter’s emotional struggles. Director Destin Daniel Cretton shared that Peter throws himself into being Spider-Man after losing so much in his personal life. According to Cretton, Peter is trying to avoid dealing with pain by focusing entirely on his responsibilities as a hero.
Tom Holland returns alongside Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. Jon Bernthal joins the film as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, while Mark Ruffalo reprises his role as Bruce Banner. Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, and Tramell Tillman are also part of the cast.
The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. It is produced by Columbia Pictures, Marvel Studios, and Pascal Pictures.
Holland also spoke about the future of Spider-Man beyond his own version of Peter Parker. He said he hopes to help introduce the next generation of Spider heroes someday.
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” Holland said.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31.
