Tony Gilroy Opens Up About Regretting ‘Andor’ — Until It Became a Star Wars Masterpiece

Tony Gilroy, the creator of Andor, has shared that he initially regretted taking on the project. In a candid interview, he admitted that during the early stages, he felt overwhelmed and doubted the show’s potential. He even hoped that the COVID-19 pandemic would halt its production.
“Every morning I thought, ‘What have I done? I’ve fucked my life… I’ve committed all these people here… this is horrible,’” Gilroy confessed.
Despite these feelings, Gilroy’s perspective began to change once filming commenced and he saw the quality of the work being produced.
“During COVID, I was very unhappy when the phone calls started coming in [to continue working on it]… [but] you have your pride of work, that never goes away… you’re just going to do the best you can all the time, but it was with horrible, horrible doubt… and it wasn’t until we started shooting, and stuff started coming in… when I thought ‘well, maybe this is gonna be good,’” he explained.
Andor has since become one of the most acclaimed entries in the Star Wars franchise. The series has been praised for its mature storytelling and complex characters, distinguishing itself from other Star Wars projects. It has received high ratings and critical acclaim, with some considering it the best Star Wars show to date.
Reflecting on the journey, Gilroy now views Andor as a significant achievement in his career. He acknowledges the challenges faced during its development but also recognizes the impact and quality of the final product.
“I don’t think I’ll ever have a chance to work on anything as important as this,” Gilroy stated. “This has been the most important thing I’ll ever get to do in terms of how much imagination went into it, how much work went into it, how much of a better writer I became doing it, how much I learned doing it, and how important the subject matter was and the scale of it.”
