Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” is tracking for a major box office debut, with early estimates pointing to a $150 million opening weekend in North America. If the projection holds, it would mark the strongest opening in the long-running franchise’s history.

The animated sequel is co-directed by Andrew Stanton and Kenna Harris and is set to continue one of Pixar’s most successful series, which has spanned more than three decades. The current tracking suggests that “Toy Story 5” could easily surpass “Toy Story 4,” which opened with $120.9 million back in 2019 before the pandemic period reshaped the theatrical landscape.

Industry projections also place “Toy Story 5” at the top of the 2026 box office year-to-date. It is expected to outperform other major releases, including Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal’s “Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which previously opened with $131.7 million. If the numbers hold, Pixar would reclaim the top domestic opening of the year so far.

The film is also being positioned as one of the strongest summer releases to date. Early audience tracking shows strong interest across multiple demographics, with both family audiences and younger viewers showing high intent. Reports indicate that first-choice interest is particularly strong among adults under 25, as well as families with children, which is consistent with the franchise’s long-standing appeal.

Ticket sales for “Toy Story 5” recently opened, adding to early momentum ahead of its June 19 release. The film’s placement on the Pixar summer calendar is also seen as strategic, giving it a strong runway during a peak theatrical period.

While expectations are high, analysts also note that projections have shifted in the past for previous entries in the franchise. “Toy Story 4” ultimately exceeded earlier tracking estimates, suggesting that “Toy Story 5” could also fluctuate depending on final marketing push and audience response in the weeks leading up to release.

The film brings back several core voice actors, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Tony Hale, and others, alongside a new cast of characters voiced by performers such as Greta Lee, Conan O’Brien, and Bad Bunny. The story continues the world established in earlier films, focusing on changes in Bonnie’s life as new technology and new toys reshape her imagination.

Pixar’s return to the franchise is also notable for its production changes. This is the first main “Toy Story” installment without involvement from co-creator John Lasseter. However, longtime Pixar composer Randy Newman returns, joined by new musical contributions from Taylor Swift.

Directed by Andrew Stanton, who previously worked on major Pixar titles, the film aims to balance nostalgia with a modern update to the franchise’s themes. Early descriptions of the story suggest a shift toward how children interact with new forms of digital play, while still maintaining the emotional core that has defined the series.

With strong tracking, a prime release date, and one of animation’s most recognizable brands, “Toy Story 5” is positioned as one of the biggest box office stories of 2026 heading into summer.
