Trailer for ‘Trainwreck: The Real Project X’ Released: The Party 2012 Megahit Project X Was Based On Is Finally Getting Its Netflix Adaptation!

Netflix just dropped a sneak peek at Trainwreck: The Real Project X, and it looks absolutely wild. This new episode tells the true story behind the chaos that hit the small Dutch town of Haren back in 2012.
What started as a sweet sixteen party turned into something way more intense, a full-blown riot, all because of a Facebook invite that went viral.
The whole thing sounds like it came straight out of a movie, and maybe it kind of did. Just months before it happened, the movie Project X hit theaters. It was about a high school party that spirals out of control, with hundreds of people showing up, destroying everything in sight, and getting into trouble with the cops.
That movie may have actually inspired what happened in Haren, making this real-life disaster even more unbelievable.
So here’s what really went down. A teenage girl in Haren, which is in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands, just wanted to throw a party for her 16th birthday. She created a Facebook event to invite her friends, but she made one mistake: she forgot to set it to private. Suddenly, anyone on Facebook could see it and RSVP. And they did. A lot of them.
The invite blew up online. More and more people shared it, and soon, thousands had said they were coming. Local authorities didn’t think it would turn into a big deal and didn’t really prepare for anything major. That turned out to be a huge mistake.
When the night of the party came around, a massive crowd showed up in Haren. It was way more than anyone expected. Things got out of hand fast.
People started rioting, destroying property, looting stores, and clashing with the police. The town was left with major damage, and the event made headlines all over the country. What was supposed to be a small birthday gathering had become one of the craziest social media disasters anyone had seen.
Trainwreck: The Real Project X dives into how it all happened. The episode features interviews, old footage, and social media posts to show how quickly everything spiraled. It also explores how the Project X movie may have encouraged the madness. One of the key ideas in the episode is that fiction and reality blur in a dangerous way. Teenagers saw the movie, then saw the invite, and thought, let’s make it real.
Netflix’s Trainwreck anthology tells stories of real-world media disasters, and this one definitely fits the bill. The series started airing on June 10, 2025, and this particular episode is coming to Netflix on July 8.
Executive producers say the show is all about showing what can happen when things spiral out of control online. As one of the producers put it, “It’s a look at how one small action on social media can create real-world chaos—and how entertainment can influence people in ways no one expects.”
If you’re into unbelievable true stories that show how fast things can go wrong, Trainwreck: The Real Project X is one to watch.
