‘Training Day’ Actress Charlotte Ayanna (50) Faces Misdemeanor Charges After West Hollywood Arrest
‘Training Day’ remains one of the most talked-about crime thrillers of the early 2000s. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by David Ayer, the 2001 film follows rookie LAPD officer Jake Hoyt through a one-day evaluation with veteran narcotics detective Alonzo Harris, played by Denzel Washington. It was made on a reported budget of $45 million and featured a deep supporting cast that included Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Macy Gray and Eva Mendes.
Charlotte Ayanna played Lisa, the wife of Ethan Hawke’s character, who waits for him at home. It was a small but memorable role, and it is the credit that most outlets still lead with when they write about her.
Ayanna was born Charlotte Lopez in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and won Miss Teen USA in 1993 representing Vermont. She moved into acting afterward and later changed her surname. Her first credit under the new name was a 1998 episode of ‘Profiler’, and she went on to appear in ‘Jawbreaker’, ‘Dancing at the Blue Iguana’, ‘Kate & Leopold’ and ‘Love the Hard Way’.
Now Ayanna is in the news for a very different reason. According to law enforcement sources cited by TMZ, she was arrested in West Hollywood after an Oct. 8 incident that began when deputies responded to a welfare check. Authorities say the situation turned violent.
The alleged victim told deputies that Ayanna threatened his life, battered him and spread cremated human remains inside the residence. Authorities also allege she kicked a deputy during the investigation.
She was ultimately arrested on suspicion of criminal threats, elder abuse, battery on a peace officer and depositing human remains outside of a cemetery. On Monday, prosecutors filed three misdemeanor counts against her: battery, elder or dependent adult abuse, and battery on a peace officer. She is being held on $50,000 bail.
Ayanna has pushed back on the allegations. She told TMZ that the arrest was “an unfair illegal false arrest.” As with any criminal case, the allegations remain unproven, and she is presumed innocent unless and until a court decides otherwise.
The reports so far rely on law enforcement sources and the police account of the incident. None of the allegations has been tested in court, and the alleged victim has not been publicly identified in the coverage we reviewed. The reports also did not include a court date.
The story has traveled quickly beyond the U.S. Croatia’s Index.hr ran a report describing an American actress accused of assaulting and mistreating an older person, a sign of how far the ‘Training Day’ connection carries when a name from the film makes headlines.
Ayanna’s profile has never been limited to one role. She co-authored the 1996 book ‘Lost in the System’ with Susan Dworkin, which detailed her childhood, and she has been described as a former foster child who became a spokeswoman for children in care. In 2002, she won the Best Actress award at the Valenciennes International Festival of Action and Adventure Films for ‘Love the Hard Way’, tying with Kajol.
Her acting credits stretch from 1995 to 2012, and Wikipedia lists her as active again from 2023 onward. That return made her more visible to fans again after a long gap.
For now, the story is a developing one. More details are likely to emerge as the case moves through the court process, and the outcome will determine how this chapter is remembered.
How do you think news of Charlotte Ayanna’s arrest will affect her legacy as an actress?
