Travis Scott Reveals He Had No Idea What He Was Doing on the Set of ‘The Odyssey’
Christopher Nolan has never been shy about pulling talent from unexpected corners of the entertainment world, but ‘The Odyssey’ pushed that instinct further than fans initially expected. Between its stacked ensemble of A-list actors and a genuinely surprising musical cameo, the film’s casting choices generated headlines well before it ever hit theaters.
That surprise cameo belonged to Travis Scott, whose surprise appearance in the film’s marketing first went viral back in January when a TV spot aired during the AFC Championship game. Since then, fans have been curious about exactly how the rapper ended up landing a role in one of the year’s most ambitious blockbusters.
Scott finally answered that question during an appearance on The Tonight Show on July 21, recalling his genuine disbelief when Nolan first approached him about joining the cast. He told Jimmy Fallon that Nolan simply said he was working on a movie and wanted him to be in it, prompting Scott to ask whether Nolan actually understood that he made music rather than acted.
That confusion did not stop once he arrived on set. Scott admitted that he thought filming would essentially just involve him and a handful of extras, joking that he had no idea he would be surrounded by so many incredible actors and openly confessing that he genuinely did not know what he was doing once he realized the scale of the production.
Scott’s role in the film sees him portray a Greek bard tasked with recounting Odysseus’s legendary exploits from the Trojan War, including the famous strategy behind the Trojan Horse. The character appears in a dramatic banquet hall sequence alongside Tom Holland’s Telemachus and Jon Bernthal’s Menelaus, delivering lines that hint at the war still to come.
This marks Scott’s biggest acting opportunity to date, following smaller prior appearances in 2019’s ‘Gully’ and Harmony Korine’s 2023 film ‘Aggro Dr1ft.’ Landing a role in a Christopher Nolan blockbuster represents an entirely different scale of exposure compared to those earlier credits.
The collaboration also reunited Scott with Nolan following their prior work together on 2020’s ‘Tenet,’ for which Scott contributed the track “The Plan.” Nolan previously described Scott’s musical contribution to that film as the final piece of a yearlong creative puzzle, praising the insight Scott brought to the narrative and musical structure he was building alongside composer Ludwig Göransson.
Scott’s musical talents remained part of the equation for ‘The Odyssey’ as well, with the rapper recording the film’s end credits song titled “When I’m Home.” That dual role as both actor and musical contributor gave Scott a genuinely unique position within the film’s overall production.
With ‘The Odyssey’ continuing to dominate the box office since its July 17 release, Scott’s candid recollection of joining the cast offers fans a fun behind-the-scenes look at just how unexpected his casting truly was, even to Scott himself. Given how well the collaboration turned out, it seems unlikely this will be the last time Nolan finds an unconventional way to bring him into a project.
