Presenter pairings at the Emmys don’t always get much attention, often serving as a brief transition between the night’s bigger storylines. Every so often, though, the Television Academy puts together a duo that feels genuinely worth watching in its own right.

Monday night’s ceremony delivered one of those moments when two of Hollywood’s most respected actresses shared the stage together for the first time. The pairing brought together an Oscar-nominated film star making her first appearance at the show and a seasoned Emmy winner with a résumé built almost entirely in television.

Julia Garner and Florence Pugh took the stage together to present Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, handing the award to Rhea Seehorn for her performance as Carol Sturka in Apple TV’s ‘Pluribus.’ The win marked Seehorn’s first-ever Primetime Emmy, capping a category that also included Jennifer Aniston for ‘The Morning Show,’ Keri Russell for ‘The Diplomat,’ Christine Baranski for ‘The Gilded Age,’ and Zendaya for ‘Euphoria.’

For Pugh, the moment doubled as her Emmys debut, and she leaned into the occasion with a dramatic lilac gown that stood out even in a room full of high-fashion moments. The actor has built her reputation largely through film work, making her first walk into television’s biggest night a notable one for fans who’ve followed her career across both mediums.

Garner, by contrast, arrived with a deep and specific Emmy history already behind her. She’s won three Emmys total, all for playing Ruth Langmore on Netflix’s ‘Ozark,’ taking home Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2019, 2020, and 2022. That same year, she also picked up a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series for her portrayal of Anna Delvey in ‘Inventing Anna.’

That combination gave the presenting duo an interesting dynamic, pairing someone deeply embedded in the Emmys’ recent history with someone experiencing the ceremony for the very first time. Garner’s track record in the exact type of category she and Pugh were presenting only added a layer of credibility to the moment, even though she wasn’t part of this year’s nominee lineup herself.

The Garner and Pugh pairing was just one piece of a heavily stacked presenter lineup throughout the night. Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited on stage to present another major category, while Alan Cumming and Emmy Rossum handled Drama Supporting Actress earlier in the broadcast, all part of a ceremony that also featured Sally Field introducing a tribute to Dolly Parton alongside a live performance from Reba McEntire.

That density of star power reflected just how packed this year’s telecast was overall, with the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category itself considered one of the more competitive races of the night. Seehorn’s win over a field stacked with established names like Aniston and Zendaya made the moment feel earned rather than expected, and having Garner and Pugh deliver the news only added to the sense of occasion.

For a night filled with plenty of bigger headline moments, the Garner and Pugh pairing offered a quieter but still memorable highlight, proof that even presenter duos can carry real weight when the chemistry is right.
