Universal Cracks Down After ‘The Odyssey’ Gets Leaked in Full to Millions of X Users

Christopher Nolan has always insisted his films are meant to be experienced on the biggest screen possible, and ‘The Odyssey’ was built entirely around that philosophy. Shot completely on IMAX cameras and marketed heavily as a theatrical event, the film represents the most expensive production of Nolan’s career, making the idea of anyone watching it any other way feel almost sacrilegious to its own design.

That careful theatrical strategy hit a serious snag this past weekend. Barely two weeks into its release, ‘The Odyssey’ found itself at the center of a major piracy scare after a high-quality bootleg of the film began circulating widely across social media.

The leak first appeared on X on Saturday at 2:25 p.m. Pacific time, when a post claiming someone had uploaded the full movie quickly went viral, amassing more than 2.1 million views within just two and a half hours before a copyright takedown notice replaced the video, and the responsible account was suspended. A second, lower quality copy surfaced again the following morning, this time gathering close to 50,000 views before it too was removed roughly two hours later.

Universal responded swiftly and directly to the situation, confirming in a statement that it had become aware of the unauthorized posting and immediately initiated takedown protocols. The studio added that it takes copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect its content and intellectual property rights, in a statement given to The Hollywood Reporter.

Despite the studio’s rapid response, the leak has proven difficult to fully contain. X has previously drawn criticism from copyright holders for being slow to act on infringement reports, and additional lower quality clones of the pirated file reportedly continued resurfacing on the platform even after the original uploads were taken down, occasionally disguised behind mislabeled links that redirected unsuspecting viewers to unrelated content instead.

This is not the first time footage from the film has ended up online without Universal’s permission. Even the movie’s original teaser, which debuted exclusively in theaters ahead of ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ back in 2025, was captured on mobile phones and spread across social platforms shortly after its theatrical premiere, echoing a pattern Nolan has dealt with on past projects like ‘Tenet.’

The leak also arrives amid a separate wave of controversy surrounding the film, after Elon Musk publicly criticized some of its casting choices and claimed his own AI tool would produce a more historically accurate version of the story. That criticism has done little to slow the film’s box office momentum, however, with ‘The Odyssey’ continuing to dominate ticket sales and sailing past 600 million dollars worldwide during its second weekend in theaters.

For a film so deliberately engineered around the theatrical experience, having a full pirated copy circulate so widely represents a genuine setback, even if it has not yet visibly dented its commercial performance. Studios generally anticipate some level of piracy risk with any major blockbuster release, but the speed and scale of this particular leak still caught many off guard, given how tightly Nolan and Universal have historically guarded early footage.

With takedown efforts ongoing and the film still performing strongly at the box office, Universal appears focused on containing further spread rather than treating this as an isolated incident. Whether additional copies continue surfacing in the coming days will likely determine just how seriously this piracy scare ultimately affects the film’s remaining theatrical run.
