VIN Diesel Declares ‘Fast Forever’ Script Complete: “The Best Script I Have Read in Decades”
Franchise finales carry a particular kind of pressure, the sense that everything built over decades needs to land just right or risk undoing years of goodwill. Few franchises understand that pressure quite like the “Fast & Furious” series, which has spent 25 years turning street racing into globe-spanning espionage without ever quite finding a clean way to wrap things up.
That search for closure has stretched on longer than fans probably expected. After ‘Fast X’ left things on a massive cliffhanger back in 2023, complete with post-credit teases for Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson’s returns, the franchise has spent years quietly working toward its planned conclusion, with the road to an actual release date proving considerably bumpier than anyone anticipated.
That wait finally has a payoff worth talking about. Vin Diesel announced that the script for ‘Fast Forever’ is done, sharing on Instagram that he had just read the screenplay by Michael Lesslie and calling it the best script he has read in decades, adding that he was “still crying” after finishing it.
The comment fits a broader pattern in how Diesel has approached promoting this particular sequel. He’s positioned ‘Fast Forever’ as the true grand finale of the mainline series, and his social media has increasingly become the primary channel through which fans learn anything concrete about the film’s development.
Diesel also teased a direct connection back to where it all began, writing that fans “will thank God” they got to see the original 2001 film in theaters this summer, a nod to the franchise’s 25th anniversary re-release of ‘The Fast and the Furious’ hitting theaters on August 21. The timing suggests Diesel sees ‘Fast Forever’ as bringing the story full circle back to its earliest roots.
Lesslie’s involvement carries its own weight given his recent track record. The screenwriter behind ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ and ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ was brought on to rewrite an earlier draft previously penned by Aaron Rabin and Zach Dean, with Diesel previously describing their working sessions together as bringing back “a story with something real beating inside it.”
Despite the momentum behind the script news, production timelines remain murky. Diesel had previously claimed to be “on set” for the film back in July, though reports later clarified that filming had not actually begun, leaving some uncertainty about exactly where the project stands logistically even with a finished screenplay in hand.
The finale is set to be directed once again by Louis Leterrier, who helmed ‘Fast X,’ and is currently scheduled to hit theaters on March 17, 2028. Diesel has also floated some eyebrow-raising details about what’s ahead, including a role reportedly written for soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo and the return of Paul Walker’s character Brian O’Conner in some form, more than a decade after Walker’s death in 2013.
With a completed script now in hand and Diesel’s enthusiasm running at full volume, fans finally have something concrete to hold onto after years of scattered updates. Whether the finished film lives up to Diesel’s tearful praise remains to be seen, but the finish line for Dom Toretto’s saga is at least starting to come into focus.
