‘War’ Episode 2 Recap and Ending Explained: Morgan’s Costly Slip, a Secret Recording and Flora’s Message
Divorce dramas usually win viewers with heartbreak, but ‘War‘ has found a more entertaining angle by treating a breakup like a courtroom blood sport. The legal series, created by George Kay and starring Dominic West and Sienna Miller, follows a tech entrepreneur and a film star as two London law firms fight over their split. After a messy opener, the show only gets sharper in its follow-up.
The second installment, titled ‘No More Nasty Surprises’, aired Thursday on HBO and HBO Max in the US, and on Friday on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Here is what happened and what the ending sets up.
The premiere ended with Morgan, played by West, sleeping with a stranger who turned out to be a honey trap set up by his wife, Carla. He then had divorce papers served on her at the red carpet for her film premiere, which gave his side the first move. That means Carla’s firm, Taylor & Byrne, enters the next chapter on the back foot.
The case pits Taylor & Byrne against Cathcarts & Sons, and the series features Phoebe Fox as Serena, James McArdle as Nicholas and Archie Renaux as young lawyer Johnny Warren. A second season has been ordered and will shift to a defamation case with a new cast.
The new episode centers on a mediation session, which works mainly as a fact-finding mission. A mediator shuttles between the two sides’ war rooms, passing along increasingly hostile offers. Morgan opens with £17 million up front, half of his assets excluding one property, and monthly payments until his retirement.
Carla laughs and counters with a demand for £100 million, half of everything including that property, and higher payments until a retirement age 15 years later. Then Morgan makes a blunder, admitting that his company is now worth much more than when the prenup was drawn up. That admission hands Carla’s lawyers a point they can use to challenge the agreement.

Johnny joins Taylor & Byrne, but Nicholas and Serena don’t know he is working for both sides. He learns about Flora, the woman who tested Morgan’s fidelity in the premiere, and watches as Serena presses her to sign a nondisclosure agreement. The pitch is that it is for her own protection.
Flora’s mother then demands $20,000 before her daughter will sign. Serena and Carla approve the payment, and Johnny routes it so it can’t be traced to the firm. Flora signs, and everything appears to be handled.
It isn’t. Cathcarts obtains a recording of Johnny telling Serena the money was paid and the NDA signed as instructed. That gives Morgan’s side evidence of misconduct by the opposing firm, a potential turning point as the case heads toward arbitration.
The final moment is quieter but just as loaded. Flora messages Morgan to say she wants to see him. It’s unclear whether the invitation is sincere or strategic, and one recap notes that the meeting would be risky for Morgan in arbitration terms, though he will likely accept.

One critic describes the series as making divorce entertaining, even when the characters are suffering. The same review is less inclined to root for Carla, since her refusal of £17 million feels ungenerous given her wealth, while Morgan’s side is funnier largely because of his foolishness. Neither side is easy to root for, and that is part of the appeal.
The ensemble also shines. Characters such as Smallwood, David and Beatrice deliver barbed remarks and theatrics, and one scene includes Beatrice snubbing Serena. Those small flourishes keep a very talky legal drama lively.
The first season has 8 episodes, released weekly, so there is plenty of fighting left. The next installment, ‘Chip Off the Old Block’, airs in the US on Oct. 15. The big questions are whether Johnny’s double role comes back to haunt him, and whether Morgan’s meeting with Flora ends up creating the very surprise that the title promises to avoid.
Is Flora genuinely trying to reconnect with Morgan, or is she setting another trap?
