Warner Bros. and Paramount Just Got Dethroned, and 2026’s Box Office Leaderboard Has Never Looked More Brutal

The 2026 domestic box office has been shaping up as one of the stronger years in recent memory, with several studios posting major wins and a handful of billion-dollar worldwide hits already on the board. But not every major player has been riding that wave equally, and the gap between the industry’s winners and losers has become impossible to ignore.

Warner Bros. in particular has had a brutal stretch, entering September without a single domestic release crossing $100 million, the first time that has happened for the studio in 25 years outside of the pandemic-disrupted 2020. Every other major studio has had at least two films clear that mark domestically in 2026, making Warner Bros.’ shutout especially glaring by comparison, with high-profile releases like ‘Supergirl’ and ‘The Bride!’ both landing as costly disappointments.

That struggle has now produced a striking shakeup in the year-to-date studio rankings. According to a breakdown of the 2026 domestic box office race, Warner Bros. and Paramount have both been pushed out of the top five highest-grossing studios so far this year, with Universal leading at $1.43 billion, followed by Sony at $1.18 billion, Disney at $1.05 billion, Amazon MGM at $557 million, and Lionsgate rounding out the list at $518 million.

Universal’s position at the top comes largely on the strength of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ both of which have helped the studio become one of the most consistent performers of the year. Sony, meanwhile, owes much of its second-place standing to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which opened to the biggest domestic debut in history and has continued climbing toward $1.665 billion worldwide.

Warner Bros.’ absence from the top five stands in sharp contrast to its dominant 2025, when the studio pulled in more than $1.8 billion domestically. This year’s slate has combined for just a fraction of that total, with ‘Wuthering Heights’ standing as the studio’s highest-grossing release despite topping out at a modest $241 million worldwide.

Paramount hasn’t fared much better, continuing a decline that has followed the studio through multiple ownership changes in recent years. Both studios now find themselves trailing not just the traditional major players, but also Amazon MGM, a relatively new full-scale theatrical distributor that has only been operating at this level since the start of 2026, and Lionsgate, a mid-size studio that has spent years working its way back into relevance.

The timing adds an extra layer of intrigue given the ongoing conversations around a potential Paramount-Warner Bros. merger, with both studios’ theatrical struggles raising questions about what a combined entity would actually be inheriting on the box office side. For now, the rest of 2026 still holds potential turnaround opportunities for Warner Bros., including ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which could offer the studio its clearest shot at a true tentpole hit before the year closes out.
