Warner CEO David Zaslav Says They Will Focus More on Their Main IPs Like ‘Harry Potter’ and DC in the Future: “Those belong to us, and they’ll only belong to us forever.”

Despite being a major studio, Warner Bros. Discovery has been struggling in recent years, especially when compared to Disney. The company has a series of A-list IPs, but after the Harry Potter franchise ended, they’ve failed to gain traction in the same way.
The DCEU was a major failed attempt, and the Fantastic Beasts franchise underperformed. Pair that with the numerous internal shakeups that took place, you can understand that WBD is not where it wants to be.
The company has been doing relatively well recently, but it’s still not the desired level. Company CEO David Zaslav seems to have an idea on how to fix that going forward, though.
As you know, Warner Bros. owns several big IPs like Harry Potter, DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of Oz and others. And while the company has other IPs as well and is regularly producing original content, Zaslav thinks that these IPs are the future of the company.
This is not the first time this has been said, and it seems that WBD is slowly, but steadily working on revitalizing some of these franchises. The DCU is going to have its big proper debut this summer when Superman comes out; a new Lord of the Rings movie is in pre-production; Harry Potter will be getting a highly anticipated TV series reboot, and so forth.
The company is working hard on keeping up with Disney and if these projects turn out to be a success, WBD might just make it. Remember how Hogwarts Legacy became a global hit? Sure, it’s a video game and not a movie, but it could be a proper formula that the company will be able to apply elsewhere.
There is a lot of unexplored ground there and since, as Zaslav put it, these franchises are not going anywhere, the company just needs to hit the right buttons and we’re certain that the IPs will finally bring in what WBD wants them to bring in.
Hopefully, all of this leads to a series of great projects that the fans will enjoy, which is why we’re supporting this decision. But, it is also important to create original content, so we hope that WBD won’t neglect that aspect in favor of the A-list IPs.
