Even though the final season of Squid Game was a hit, many fans couldn’t help but notice a strange issue with the English dubbing, especially when it came to the VIP characters. These VIPs, who watched the deadly games from the sidelines, sounded awkward and off in the English version, and it made some viewers uncomfortable. Since these characters played a big part in the last season, their odd voices almost distracted from the show itself.

Now, Bryan Bucco, the actor who played one of the VIPs, has finally explained why their voices sounded so different. After a TikTok video criticized the VIPs’ acting, Bucco revealed that the voice people heard wasn’t actually his. “Those are the English dubs,” he said. “I was the actual actor. What’s being played here isn’t my voice.”

Bucco was careful not to blame the voice actors who did the dubbing. He said he wasn’t sure why his voice was replaced but mentioned that the dub actors tried their best. “It seems they did use voice actors to try and sound like us. I don’t even want to shit on my voice actor either because I think he did fine, I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him to say his lines either haha.”

Interestingly, Bucco also pointed out that some versions of the show still have his original voice, while others use the dubbed voices. “I’ve seen different clips floating around where some have my voice, and others that are clearly not me,” he explained. “It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. Just if it sounds dubbed, that’s because it probably is. And the ones used in this video above ARE the dubbed voices.”

Bryan Bucco plays the American VIP who wears the eagle mask. In the comments on TikTok, he agreed with fans who said the VIP characters didn’t add much to the story. “I agree. They didn’t further the story or compliment it well,” he wrote when someone called the VIPs “useless.”

He wasn’t sure why the dubbing decision was made but guessed Netflix might be responsible. Bucco mentioned he had watched a version on a pirated streaming site that didn’t have the dubbed voices. “I think whoever is contracted to do the dubbing, does ALL of the dubbing. That will always be the default English dub. The Korean version shouldn’t have English dubs. If there are some in the Korean version, it would have to be due to specific lines having to be re-recorded for clarity.”

Fans hoping to see Bucco’s VIP again might get their wish, maybe next time with Bucco’s real voice. If you want to dig deeper into the ending of Squid Game, there’s a full breakdown available.
