The new series The Testaments has sparked strong reactions after a disturbing storyline involving a teenage character and a visit to a dentist.

Viewers were unsettled by scenes involving Agnes, the daughter of June Osborne, who now lives in Gilead under a new identity. The story takes place many years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale and focuses on life inside the same strict regime.

Beware of possible spoilers!

In the episode, Agnes begins to experience changes that are treated as important in Gilead’s system. After this, she visits a dentist, Dr. Grove, who is connected to someone she knows. During the appointment, she is left alone with him, and the scene shows him behaving in a way that makes her uncomfortable. He speaks to her in a way that suggests she is being viewed differently now that she is growing up.

Later in the story, Agnes returns for another dental procedure. This time she is given a sedative. After the appointment, she notices something is wrong when she realizes her clothing is not how she remembers leaving it. The episode ends with her understanding that something may have happened to her while she was unconscious.

The story then continues to show Agnes dealing with confusion and fear, but she does not immediately speak about what she suspects.

It’s unclear what happens during the procedure but viewers can sense that Grove took advantage of his patient. It isn’t until Agnes is going to bed that she notices her shirt is unbuttoned, and she didn’t unbutton it.

The episode ends with Agnes horrified as she realises Grove likely assaulted her while she was sedated.

Viewers reacted strongly online. Many people posted on social media that they felt disturbed by what they saw. Some said they expected dark themes from the series, but still found this storyline difficult to watch. Others said the situation made them uncomfortable because the character was vulnerable and alone during the medical visit.

There was also discussion about earlier moments in the season that hinted at problems with the same character, Dr. Grove. Some viewers said those earlier scenes already made them suspicious of him, and the later events confirmed their concerns.

The episode also included a surprise appearance from Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne. Her return created a different reaction from fans, with many expressing excitement online. According to show creator Bruce Miller, June will continue to play a role in the story even though the focus is now on the next generation of characters.

In an interview cited by The Hollywood Reporter, Miller explained that June’s presence is still important to the story, even if she is not the main focus anymore. He said her connection to her daughter and the world of Gilead means she would remain involved in some way.

The series also follows another young character named Daisy, who becomes connected to a resistance group. Their stories move forward in parallel and slowly connect as the season develops. The show also brings back familiar characters from the original series, including Aunt Lydia, played by Ann Dowd.

Overall, the latest episode has become one of the most talked-about so far because of its heavy subject matter and emotional impact on viewers.

This kind of storytelling is clearly meant to show how dangerous power imbalance can be, but it also risks being too intense for some viewers. It raises a difficult question about how far TV should go when showing sensitive topics. What do you think about this episode and the direction of the series?
