We Thought ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Was Breaking Every Box Office Record? Here Comes ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel fans have had plenty to celebrate over the past several weeks, between record-breaking trailer views and a steady stream of casting reveals building toward December. But the latest wave of buzz surrounding ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has nothing to do with footage or first looks.

This time, the conversation has shifted entirely to box office math, and the numbers being thrown around are turning heads across the industry. Ticket sales for a movie still five months away from release are already being compared directly to one of the summer’s biggest blockbusters.

According to reporting from industry trackers, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is matching and in some markets even outpacing the first day sales of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ despite having access to only about a tenth of the theater allocation. That comparison is notable given how strong Brand New Day’s own numbers have already been.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has posted the best first-day presales for any film in five years, a milestone last reached by ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ back in 2021. The Tom Holland sequel reportedly pulled in more than $120 million in global presales ahead of its release, putting it in rare company alongside ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which still holds the all time advance sales record.

What makes the ‘Doomsday’ comparison so striking is the timing and access involved. Advance tickets for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ only became available starting July 20, and only for screenings at Infinity Vision theaters, a limited premium format rather than a full nationwide rollout.

Despite that narrow window, the response was immediate. Reports indicate that all Infinity Vision presale showings sold out quickly, with ‘Doomsday’ pre-sales reportedly surpassing the entire opening day haul of ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ within just two hours of tickets going live.

That kind of demand is especially remarkable considering ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will not even hit theaters until December 18, a full five months after its presale window opened. Most tentpole films do not begin serious ticket sales until just weeks before release, making this early surge an unusually strong signal of anticipation.

Fans and box office analysts online have been quick to point out how rare this kind of comparison is. There are not many prior examples of a film generating this level of presale interest this far ahead of its theatrical debut, especially when stacked against a movie as anticipated as the next mainline Spider-Man entry.

Part of the excitement can likely be traced back to the trailer drop that landed just before tickets became available. Robert Downey Jr.’s first extended look as Doctor Doom, combined with the returns of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and a wave of X-Men and Fantastic Four crossovers, gave fans plenty of reason to lock in their seats early.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set to open July 31, giving it a considerable head start before ‘Doomsday’ arrives at the end of the year. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows Peter Parker after the memory-altering events of ‘No Way Home,’ and industry projections have it tracking toward one of the biggest domestic openings of the year.

Even with that gap in release timing, the fact that ‘Doomsday’ is keeping pace this early, and doing so with a fraction of the screens available, speaks to just how much momentum Marvel has built heading into its next major crossover event. Whether that early enthusiasm translates into an actual opening weekend record remains to be seen once the film gets a full nationwide release closer to December.
